SAFETY STATEMENT
We expect our employees to ensure compliance with all applicable safety practices and policies, including those established by OSHA/DOSH regulations and by the City’s Accident Prevention Plan. This includes but is not limited to actively identifying and correcting potential hazards that may affect employee and public safety, including those identified by co-workers. CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, ensures the safety and well-being of patrons using the City of Kennewick’s pool facility. This role involves monitoring pool activities, enforcing safety rules, providing assistance and first aid when needed, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Lifeguards are key to preventing accidents and responding effectively in emergency situations, ensuring that pool visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. Lifeguards are considered variable hour employees, and schedules will vary depending on the pool’s needs throughout the season. The pool is open to the public from mid-June to mid-August, and during this time, lifeguards can expect to work between 25-40 hours per week, depending on availability and scheduling. Some lifeguards will be needed starting mid-May through the beginning of November in support of CIVIC Splash Pad operations and High School Swim Team practices and swim meets. These positions will typically range from 10-20 hours per week, depending on time of year and age restrictions when school is in session.

- Maintain surveillance and supervision of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
- Observe and enforce rules and regulations.
- Familiarize self with Emergency Action Plan;
- In water rescue skills
- First Aid skills
- CPR/AED skills
- Recognize, minimize or eliminate dangers or hazards.
- Learn and teach the Tri-Cities Recreation Swim Program (employer will provide training) and know how to use course materials effectively.
- Adapt teaching approaches to the age, experience, and ability of participants so they can meet course objectives.
- Communicate regularly with participants and their parents as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
- Present a professional appearance and use City of Kennewick issue clothing and equipment appropriately.
- Exhibit a professional and helpful attitude to patrons.
- Work closely with other lifeguards, instructors, and pool staff to ensure smooth operations and effective communication.
- Be punctual and prepared for shift
- Swim 100 yards prior to each shift
- Assist in putting out or taking down equipment and pool covers
- Maintain training by participating in in-service training and other training, meetings or education that may be deemed necessary.
- Perform pool maintenance as needed, including but not limited to routine, daily cleaning of locker areas; decks and other facility areas as needed; pool vacuuming, hosing and disinfecting decks as required.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned by supervisor.
Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Incumbent must be 16 years of age or older and must be able to obtain a valid Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid certification from one of the below certifying agencies prior to opening day. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is available in-house to selected candidates. Spots are limited and will be offered to selected candidates on a first-come, first served basis. Selected candidates who obtain their valid Lifeguarding, CPR and First-Aid certifications from an outside approved certifying agency prior to opening day will be eligible for reimbursement.

This position is not subject to health or retirement benefits. But, this position is eligible for Washington State Paid Sick Leave to accrue 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
