    Definition

    The City of Newport Beach is seeking one full-time Maintenance Worker I/II to join our team. Check out our video to see what it's like working for the City!

    This position may be filled at either the Maintenance Worker I or Maintenance Worker II level depending on the applicant's qualifications. The current vacancy is in the Streets Maintenance division of the Public Works Department. The selected candidate will be tasked in performing a variety of maintenance activities which include, but are not limited to, repairs to concrete and asphalt streets, sidewalks, curb and gutters, and street painting and sign installations. The operation of hand and power tools, compressors/jackhammers, concrete saws, and grinders are also integral in the performance of these duties. This position may also assist in other areas of maintenance as needed, which would include the Beach Maintenance operations and weekend work as needed.

    SALARY:
    • Maintenance Worker I: $4,355 - $6,431 per month
    • Maintenance Worker II: $4,572 - $6,755 per month


    SCHEDULE:
    • This position may work a 9/80 or 5/40 schedule.

    SELECTION COMPONENTS:
    • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review of applications on March 6 , 2025 . The recruitment will remain open until the position is filled.
    • Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of March 24, 2025. Applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies.

    The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of pay toward the retirement benefit.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Maintenance Worker I:

    Experience: One year of experience in performing semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work.

    Education: High school graduation or equivalent.

    License: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

    Maintenance Worker II:

    Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work, comparable to those performed by a Maintenance Worker I in the City of Newport Beach.

    Education: High school graduation or equivalent. Additional coursework or vocational training in the skilled trades desirable.

    License: Possession of, and ability to maintain, a California Class A or B commercial driver's license. Depending on assignment, additional Tanker Endorsement may be required.

    All employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, former employers will be contacted regarding drug and alcohol testing results.

The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
