    The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires , including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild.     The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Fire Equipment Mechanic vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.
    Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

    Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

    Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Fire Equipment Mechanic position.


    DEFINITION: Makes field and shop repairs to fire fighting apparatus and equipment.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
    Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Senior Fire Equipment Mechanic and are characterized by the performance of journey level repair work to fire fighting apparatus and related equipment. The positions are distinguished from Power Equipment Mechanics by the specialized nature of the equipment worked on and public service duties performed. Incumbents of this class possess and exercise thorough knowledge of equipment, tools and materials used in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair and adjustment of components and systems of fire apparatus and related equipment.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Drives two or more axle vehicles (automatic and non-synchro manual transmission) with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lbs. or more by safely maneuvering vehicles (e.g., through remote areas, unpaved, off road) in different weather conditions; following traffic laws; utilizing road/electronic maps/GPS in order to make emergency repairs, deliver vehicles, and road test vehicles.
    • Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and brake systems, and hydraulic problems on gasoline and diesel apparatus by using visual inspection techniques and a variety of test equipment (e.g., pressure gauges, computer diagnostic equipment, flow-charts, schematics, multi-meter) in order to locate the source of problems and determine what corrective actions are needed (e.g., adjustments, repairs, replacement of parts).
    • Repairs gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, rear axle, rotary and centrifugal pumps, and transfer case by removing and replacing defective parts, overhauling parts, fabricating parts, etc. using a variety of handheld, hydraulic, and power tools, pneumatic tools and equipment (e.g., micrometers, pullers, wrenches) in order to return the vehicle back into service.
    • Performs maintenance on a variety of fire equipment (e.g., air and hydraulic brakes, power steering, suspensions, electrical systems, and powertrain) by replacing worn parts, changing fluids, etc., using a variety of tools and equipment (e.g., wrenches, pliers) in order to adhere to a pre-established maintenance schedule.
    • Performs general welding and fabrication by gathering and utilizing appropriate materials (e.g., welding machine, electrodes, metal to be welded), and putting on safety gear (e.g., welding helmet, gloves, welding goggles) in order to make repairs or pre-approved modifications to equipment.
    • Completes forms, work orders, and makes logbook entries (e.g., brief written reports, inspection checklists, maintenance logs) by hand and/or using a computer word processing and/or email application in order to complete the necessary paperwork for state and federally mandated inspections, and to document the performance of scheduled maintenance, report issues or problems.


    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
    Option I: Completion of a recognized apprentice training program* of at least four (4) years' duration in the repair of gas and diesel automotive and power equipment** - AND - One (1) years' experience at the journey level***.
    Option II: Six (6) years' experience in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel automotive and power equipment**, two years of which must have been at the journey level***.

    LICENSE INFORMATION :

    A valid California Class B or higher Driver's License is required to perform job-related duties.

    Applicants for this position must provide a valid California driver's license at the time of appointment. Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked. If the applicant does not have a driving record from the State of California, the applicant may be required to provide his/her driving record from any other state/jurisdiction.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Physical Class IV- Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS: VISION: Normal color perception.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    Employees who are assigned to drive an apparatus equipped with air brakes, hazardous materials, and tank will be required to obtain a license with the proper endorsements within six (6) months of his/her assignment.

    *Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

    **Gas and diesel automotive and power equipment including all heavy on-road equipment such as trucks of at least 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, trucks of at least 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, or trailers over 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.

    ***To qualify, applicants must have been at full performance level and assigned the full-range and diversity of mechanical work.
