    The Position
    The City of Palo Alto Community Services Department seeks a part-time Theatre Technician to support performing arts activities primarily in two theatre facilities, Cubberley Theatre, located at the Cubberley Community Center and the Community Theatre, located at Lucie Stern Community Theatre. This is an entry level position which offers the opportunity to gain skills with the potential to advance to the more senior Arts & Sciences Professional classification.

    Work Hours and Schedule
    This is an hourly position with an average of 8 hours per week. Must have a flexible schedule and availability to work shifts as assigned, including evenings and weekends. (Limited Hourly employees are non-union and non-benefitted employees. They are limited to working 960 hours per fiscal year.)

    About the Facilities
    Cubberley Theatre: Located at the Cubberley Community Center, an intimate 317 seat venue with modern technical facilities, suitable for dance performances, orchestra or music concerts, corporate or cultural presentations, film screenings, lectures, and other presentations. Cubberley staff offer full technical services for events, including professional lighting, sound, and backstage support. Services are customized to meet the wide variety of needs of a diverse roster of events.
    Community Theatre: Located at the Lucie Stern Community Theatre is home to three resident companies, TheatreWorks, Palo Alto Players, and West Bay Opera, producing approximately 15 productions and a new play festival for more than 45,000 audience members annually. Support staff provide scheduling oversight and maintenance support for city-owned equipment.

    Essential Duties

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Customer service, facilitating the needs of facility users and audiences;
    • Performing routine maintenance and inspections of equipment and facility;
    • Working with volunteer and professional stage hands to support City events, rentals and activities produced by rental or resident companies;
    • Providing on-site production and stage management expertise for users with varying levels of theatrical skills;
    • Oversight and enforcement of facility safety protocols.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
    • Some performing arts production experience (may be obtained in an academic, commuinty or professional setting and may include classical or popular music, dance, theatre);
    • Experience with AV systems and consoles, including permanent theatrical lighting systems, light boards and experience with audio recording playback and reinforcement;
    • Ablity to trouble-shoot, based on the various needs of a wide-range of customers;
    • Ability and desire to learn on the job, and build technical and facility knowlege.
