    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    PLEASE NOTE:

    READ - IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENT:

    A copy of a current college transcript, ISSUED FROM THE REGISTRAR with a signature and/or school watermark, must be attached to the application at time of submission. The transcript must show current GPA, credits, and current enrollment or recent graduation date.

    DEGREE PLANS OR GRADES FROM A STUDENT SELF-SERVICE PORTAL WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Omission of a transcript will be the basis for disqualification.

    International degrees must be accompanied with an evaluation of the comparable academic qualification. There are several associations related to degree evaluations that can be contacted to obtain the required documentation (i.e. Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), etc.).

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    Under the direction of the District Supervisor, this internship is responsible for assisting in the collection, recording, and processing of biological data on the State's freshwater fisheries. Interacts and works closely with the general public to gather fisheries-related data, provide information and/or conduct outreach. Responsible for helping maintain equipment and facilities. May operate vehicles, boats, motors and other fisheries sampling equipment. Completes routine administrative paperwork. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months;

    Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university at time of application;

    Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.

    Experience :

    None required.

    Licensure :

    Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Undergraduate or graduate courses from an accredited college or university in Aquatic Science.

    Experience :

    Experience in using a personal computer;

    Experience in software programs such as MS Word and Excel;

    Experience in safely using a kayak;

    Experience using geographical information system (GIS) programs and software;

    Experience in basic fish handling techniques;

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of principles of sampling fish and aquatic habitats;

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

    Skill in the use of personal computers;

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

    Skill in managing several projects simultaneously;

    Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions;

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

    Ability to collect and record biological data including angler surveys on a river using a kayak;

    Ability to learn to identify and work with common freshwater fish, plants, and organisms;

    Ability to operate vehicles, boats, motors, kayaks, and specialized sampling equipment;

    Ability to communicate effectively with the public;

    Ability to accurately follow written or verbal instructions;

    Ability to complete assigned tasks;

    Ability to maintain facilities and equipment;

    Ability to work as a member of a team;

    Ability to swim;

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. or a team lift, as necessary;

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

    Required to perform work in water-based field activities, including work aboard boats and kayaks;

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. or a team lift as necessary;

    Required to travel 10% with possible overnight stays;

    May be required to operate a State vehicle;

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
