    Description

    Join the City of Palo Alto Parks Maintenance team and help us keep our community green and beautiful!

    Park Services maintains 162 acres of urban parklands, including Rinconada, Mitchell, and Greer Parks. We also care for libraries, community centers, business districts, and utility sub-stations. Our maintenance programs cover landscape plant materials, irrigation systems, turf, school athletic fields, tennis courts, sports fields, playgrounds, picnic facilities, dog runs, basketball courts, and a lawn bowling green.

    Under general supervision, the Park Maintenance Person performs skilled gardening tasks, recommends landscape designs, selects and maintains plants, and performs minor repairs on park furniture and fencing. They may also operate mowing equipment and work independently on special landscaping projects.

    Schedule: 6:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m., Monday - Friday (9/80 work schedule, every other Friday off)

    Essential Duties

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Recommends location and type of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers for particular landscape effect.
    • Maintains the above plant material with professional skill necessary to artistically meet the demands of the landscape and buildings.
    • Performs routine maintenance operations such as mowing, fertilizing, cultivating, grading, etc., necessary to maintain established landscape effect; maintains indoor plants.
    • Performs minor repairs with hand tools of park furniture and fencing such as patching fences, smoothing rough metals, applying preventative wood treatments, reinforcing furniture seats and legs.
    • Confers with supervisor to plan and review work projects; may direct and coordinate activities of a small ground maintenance crew.
    • Operates a variety of mowing equipment and provides services necessary to keep mowing equipment operative.
    Related Functions:
    • Requisitions equipment and required materials; assists crew workers in completion of maintenance and gardening projects.
    • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:

    • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
    and

    • Two years' experience in general park maintenance work or related landscape maintenance experience.

    Special Requirements:
    • Valid California Driver's License
