As an award winning, vibrant, and growing community, the City of Richmond, Virginia is seeking an experienced Director of Economic Development. The next Director of Economic Development will recognize this incredible opportunity to aggressively pursue new development, diversification, and adaptive reuse as well as stimulate innovative public-private partnerships for this maturing city. Working collaboratively with the City’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), and the Richmond Economic Development Agency (Richmond EDA), the Director of Economic Development will further assist the Mayor and City Council in exploring options for strategic decisions on investments, infrastructure, and funding. At the same time, The Director of Economic Development will serve as the point person for a business dominated platform that includes a full range of stakeholders including the business community, civic leaders, developers, educational partners, and the broader community. The Director of Economic Development reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer and is a key member of the City’s Executive Leadership Team. The Economic Development Team consists of a staff of 17 (including the Director) and an operating budget of $14,314,222. The Department is organized into four Divisions: Administration, Business Attraction, Real Estate Strategies, and Retention & Expansion. These Divisions work in harmony to achieve the overall mission of the Department as well as working collaboratively with the City’s Economic Development Authority.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in economics, finance, urban planning, public administration, business administration, or a related field. A Master’s or other advanced degree is a significant plus.
Experience: The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible related experience that includes significant management and supervisory experience. Substantial experience within an urban environment and substantial experience in community economic development is required.
Candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications and career history, presented through their submittal of a comprehensive package of information outlining career highlights and notable achievements.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the Department) may be used to meet the minimum requirements of the classification.
The compensation for Director of Economic Development is up to a maximum of $259,250 annually (DOQ). The Director will also receive an excellent benefits package.
