    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in a construction or traffic control role.
    • Education may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
    • Valid Texas Driver License.
    Notes to Applicants
    Under general direction, this position performs skilled and complex tasks in the installation, maintenance, and removal of traffic control signs and markings. This position oversees quality assurance and quality control and may manage projects to ensure appropriate execution of assigned work. This position will lead a crew of field technicians. Additionally, the individual in this position may receive daily work and prepare materials and equipment that are skilled and complex in nature.

    Drug Testing: To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.

    Driving Requirement: This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. This position must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    Preferred Experience:
    • A working knowledge of, or a clear understanding of, the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices ( TXMUTCD ).
    • Experience or working knowledge of maintenance planning and work scheduling for Traffic Signs, Markings, and Banners.
    • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Experience leading team projects.
    • Experience using, or working knowledge of: SharePoint, Knack or other Asset Management systems.
    • Completion of or certification from: American Traffic Safety Services Association ( ATSSA ) Traffic Control Technician ( TCT ), Traffic Control Supervisor ( TCS ) or International Municipal Signal Association ( IMSA ), Work Zone Traffic Control ( WTC ), Signs and Markings Level 1 (SM1), Signs and Markings level 2 (SM2), or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Receives and coordinates daily work assignments for crew activities, prepares materials and equipment. Provides training, monitoring, and feedback of completed work. Resolves conflicts on job work sites. Provides input for employee performance evaluations. Prepares and tracks electronic documentation of daily activities and/or projects of field crews. Performs maintenance on road markings, tools, and machinery. Installs pavement markings on roadways, parking lots, athletic courts, and airports according to specifications and other various requirements. Monitors or performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Monitors or performs pre-trip/ post trip inspections on tools, equipment, and machinery. Calculates field measurements using engineered plans, maps, aerial photographs, or satellite images. Installs, removes, and replaces signs as needed. Documents daily work in work order software. Assigns or performs traffic control. Operates, leads, trains, and evaluates staff in the operation of all equipment to install pavement markings.. Coordinates purchasing and oversees warehouse inventory.

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local codes; City practices, policies, and procedures including construction, customer service, and DIG TESS safety procedures and policies including ATSSA and TMUTCD .
    • Knowledge of effective principles and practices of leadership.
    • Knowledge of purchasing, contracts, and warehouse inventory.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in the installation of Bike Corral/Racks, Road Cushions, Traffic Legends and Symbols, and Vertical delineation devices.
    • Skill in the layout of Roadway Markings Plans.
    • Skill in the use of fabrication equipment, fabrication software design programs, and CAD programs, and use of other related databases.
    • Skill in the use of hand tools.
    • Ability to accurately log, monitor, and report work progress, materials, labor hours, etc. with or without the use of computer software.
    • Ability to effectively explain policy to employees in a professional manner and resolve conflicts.
    • Ability to effectively manage projects and delegate responsibilities.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the public in a leadership role.
    • Ability to interpret engineering plans, work orders, schematics, and regulations.
    • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
    • Ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and provide feedback on the work of others.
    • Ability to operate maintain, and/or install drill/driver machine and all appropriate equipment.
    • Ability to perform Striper Coning functions.
    • Ability to test and calibrate instruments to make precision and close tolerance repairs and adjustments.
    • Ability to use cell phones, two-way radios, and other communications equipment.
