    ABOUT THE POSITION

    Clark County Family Services is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Child Development Assistant position. While working directly on the Child Haven campus, the Child Development Assistant will provide physical care and emotional nurturance to abused, neglected and abandoned children. The children may be behaviorally or emotionally impaired and some may be medically fragile. This position ensures the safety and security of children while performing housekeeping and custodial duties.

    THIS RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 500 APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AND WILL CLOSE WITHOUT NOTICE ONCE THAT NUMBER IS REACHED.

    This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

    In order to work at the Department of Family Services, employees must not have any qualifying offense that violates the standards required by NRS 432B.198 and/or NRS 432B.199.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school AND one (1) year full-time experience working with and caring for juveniles, preferably in a child welfare, social service, juvenile justice, residential treatment or other nurturing setting. 30 semester units of college level course work in Behavioral Science, Child Development, Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Education, Health Science, Human Services, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or Special Education may be substituted for 6 months of the required experience.

    All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.     Working Conditions: Work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts. Work with exposure to infectious or contagious diseases. Work with abused, neglected, hostile, potentially aggressive, abandoned and medically fragile children, ages three days to eighteen years.

    Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License at time of appointment. Must possess a valid County Health Card. Must obtain Mandt System certification, First Aid Training for Adult/Infants, CPR certification, and Girls and Boys Town basic skills certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

    Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

    Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

    Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Provides on-going physical care, emotional nurturing and daily supervision of abused, neglected, abandoned and medically fragile children, ages three days to eighteen years, in a treatment shelter home.
    • Drives a County motor vehicle in order to transport children.
    • Receives incoming children and inspects, launders and stores their clothing and other personal property; prepares children for release; completes and processes intake and release paperwork.
    • Identifies and responds to children's needs such as fear, hunger and illness; orients children to Child Haven and comforts and assists them in adjusting to Child Haven.
    • Performs initial assessment of admitted youth to determine potential risk to themselves and others.
    • Awakens children at appropriate times for bathroom use and school, ensuring appropriate hygiene, attire and nutrition, and to administer medications.
    • Feeds, bathes, dresses and comforts children.
    • Conducts and records bed checks, which include observing and touching children to ensure they are breathing.
    • Ensures the safety and security of the children and cottages; responds to emergency calls from other cottages.
    • Intervenes when children are out of control, using authorized strategies and restraint techniques.
    • Provides infant care including medically fragile children.
    • Performs a variety of housekeeping and custodial duties in the cottage, such as laundering clothing and bedding, dusting furniture, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom and cleaning the kitchen.
    • Maintains various records of work performed, completes incident and other reports and performs other clerical support activities.
    • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Mobility to work in a treatment shelter home and office setting, use standard home appliances and office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle in order to transport children; strength to lift, carry and restrain children; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
