Department of Public Works and Planning is offering excellent employment opportunities for motivated individuals interested in beginning a career as a
Parks Groundskeeper.
Parks Groundskeepers are utilized within various divisions of the Department of Public Works and Planning and the Fresno County Library's Facilities Division. Parks Groundskeepers are primarily responsible for maintaining County parks, grounds surrounding County Library facilities, disposal sites, recreational facilities, scenic drives, and other grounds surrounding County buildings. Positions may require the ability to work overtime, weekends (including Sundays) and holidays.
Some positions may be assigned to the American Avenue Disposal Site located in Kerman, approximately 23 miles west of Fresno. These individuals will be required to provide their own transportation to and from work (auto expenses and travel time are not covered). In addition to assignments at the American Avenue Disposal Site, these positions will also assist in seasonal landscape maintenance at closed County disposal sites.
Note : The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions in other County departments as vacancies occur. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Minimum Qualifications Experience : One (1) year of full-time, paid work experience maintaining parks, grounds, or lawns; landscaping; or farming that included planting, irrigating, and fertilizing.
License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
Other : Candidates may be required to participate in the County's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program, which includes an initial and subsequent random testing, as required by Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

SELECTION PROCESS : Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants will be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:
- Written Examination - If required, this examination will be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.
- Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived, and the names will be certified without an examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months from the date of establishment), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
