    Job Summary

    The Greenville Recreation and Parks Department is currently recruiting for a Summer Camp ASL Interpreter position to work one-on-one with individuals who are hearing impaired and provide sign language support as they participate in summer camp programs. An interpreter will need to translate from English to Sign Language and from Sign Language to English during summer camp. Camp Escape will operate for 7 weeks (Monday-Friday). ASL Interpreter position/services will only be required during the weeks that campers with hearing impairments are registered at Camp Escape.

    Minimum Age: 21 years old (as of May 13, 2025)
    Pay Rate: $25.00-$35.00 per hour

    Camps run from June 17 to August 1, 2025, Monday - Friday. The ASL interpreter will work at Camp Escape located at the Drew Steele Center.

    All staff are expected to attend mandatory training on the dates listed below:
    • May 13, 2025
    • May 15, 2025
    • May 20, 2025
    • May 22, 2025
    • May 29, 2025


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Previous experience as an ASL Interpreter
    • Previous experience working with children with developmental disabilities is preferred.
    • Ability to swim is preferred.

    Knowledge of:
    • promoting good conduct and acting as a role model for campers
    • working knowledge of interpreting practices and services
    • presenting a mature professional demeanor.
    Skilled in:
    • interprets from English to Sign Language and from Sign Language to English
    • adapting programs for campers who are hearing impaired.
    • providing personal care which may require lifting up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
    • modifying activities and environments so campers with special needs can participate fully.
    Ability to:
    • maintain effective and courteous working relationships with campers, parents, employees, community organization partners, and the general public.
    • understand and abide by Greenville Recreation and Parks Department policies and procedures.
    • understand and follow oral and written instructions.


    Special Requirements

    Required:
    • Valid North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator Licensing Board (NCITLB) licensure, required upon start.
    • Valid CPR, First Aid/AED certifications are required before the start of camp.
    • Must posses a valid driver's license by N.C or another state.
    Preferred:
    • North Carolina Certification in American Sign Language (ASL) is preferred.
    • North Carolina Intervention (NCI) Certification and Medication Administration Certification are preferred.


    Regular part-time, temporary, and seasonal employees are not eligible for benefits.
