    Description

    The City of Santa Ana is looking for individuals who are results-oriented, possess great attitude, demonstrate creativity and innovation, work efficiently, show a record of success and have a passion for public service. Under immediate supervision, performs heavy routine manual labor involved in water and sewer system and/or public works projects.

    Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

    Performs pick and shovel work on a variety of surfaces that including, but not be limited to, asphalt, concrete, unpaved streets, walks, and parkways. Assists in laying pipe; installs water services, sewer main/laterals, water meters and related components, and other appurtenances; and cleans sewer laterals. Loads and unloads supplies and materials including, but not be limited to, stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber, pipe, debris, construction materials, tools, and equipment. Digs and backfills ditches and trenches. Lifts, moves, and carries heavy objects weighing up to 95 pounds. Maintains infrastructure, material, equipment, and other work records. Responds to after-hours emergency calls. May drive small trucks and operate small power equipment; employees possessing a valid California Class “B” or higher driver’s license may operate equipment requiring said license, including cranes, dump trucks, sewer trucks, and other heavy equipment. Performs other functions as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent plus one year of laborer or related experience involving construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, water, or sewer lines; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

    DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    • Knowledge of: common tools and equipment used in public works construction, maintenance, and repair work; basic knowledge of safety precautions and practices in the operation of these common tools and equipment.
    • Skill in: the safe use of common tools and equipment used in a variety of public works construction, maintenance, and repair work.
    • Ability to: understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; perform strenuous manual tasks, often for extended periods and under occasionally adverse climatic conditions; operate standard transmission vehicles.
    Must be willing and able to perform work of a strenuous physical nature, including lifting up and carrying objects weighing up to 95 pounds.

    SPECIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    • Must possess and retain a valid California Class “C” Driver's License as a condition of employment.
    • In order to pass probation and as a condition of continued employment in this classification, employees must obtain and retain a valid California Class “B” or higher driver's license throughout tenure in this classification.
    • Must obtain and retain valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution - Grade 1 as a condition of successful completion of the probationary work test period. Must obtain and retain valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment - Grade 1 as a condition of successful completion of the probationary work test period.
    • Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
    • Must be willing and able to respond to after-hours emergency calls and perform after-hours call-out duties.
    • Must be willing and able to work outside in varying weather conditions.

    Applications will be reviewed by the Human Resources Department. Those applicants possessing the most pertinent qualifications will be invited to continue in the selection process, which will include:

    Written Examination (Tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 05, 2024) : (Qualifying) which may include questions on principles and practices of public works maintenance and repair, including tools and equipment, trenching, concrete, water, and sewer repair; arithmetic calculations; map reading; and safety.

    Oral Interview Examination (Tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2024) : (Weight of 100%) will evaluate the candidates' experience, training, education and abilities in relation to those factors which are essential for successful performance on the job. Candidates need a minimum passing score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

The Human Resources Department may waive one or more examination components. When one weighted examination component is waived, the remaining section will receive a weight of 100%.
