    The Position

    Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspectors perform skilled mechanical inspections on commercial vehicles and review related records to ensure compliance with federal and State motor carrier laws and regulations and to identify potential safety problems and mechanical deficiencies; conduct mechanical inspections at crashes; and provide technical assistance to the NHP and the motor carrier industry on the regulatory and mechanical aspects of commercial vehicle safety.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    The Highway Patrol Division (NHP) is recruiting for a Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspector to support Southern Command commercial enforcement operations. This position requires the understanding of motor carrier laws and regulations and the ability to properly apply those laws and regulations during commercial enforcement and school district bus transportation compliance; the ability to identify required documentation needed during investigations; the writing skills necessary to complete State and Federal reports; effective verbal communication skills for scheduling, conducting, and interviewing drivers and mechanical personnel during commercial enforcement and school bus transportation compliance; the ability to identify mechanical deficiencies and to determine safety deficiencies based on laws and regulations; the ability to conduct post-crash mechanical inspections of vehicles; and the ability to provide technical assistance to NHP commercial law enforcement and the motor carrier industry with Federal regulations. Please note: This position requires successful completion of the North American Standards Part A & Part B, General Hazmat, Cargo Tank, Bulk Packaging, Passenger Vehicle and Post Crash Investigative Reports of Investigation and must maintain these certifications as a condition of continued employment.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school, vocational school or the equivalent, and four years of journey-level mechanical work experience involving commercial vehicle maintenance, which included engines, brakes, suspensions, coupling devices, wheels and tires, steering and air systems; OR four years of work experience as a driver of any commercial motor vehicle which required a Class A or B Commercial Driver License; OR four years of work experience involving the mechanics, safety inspection, size-weight, registration requirement and load and safety regulations of commercial vehicles; OR one year of experience as a Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.
