  • Job Description

    Multiple vacancies with the Facilities Division of General Services. Positions are in the Visalia, Tulare, and Porterville areas and must be available to work between 7 am and 5:30pm Monday - Friday and on-call may be required. This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future vacancies. The employment list may be used to fill maintenance positions countywide including the Sheriffs’ adult and Probation juvenile detention facilities.

    Typical Duties

    Perform maintenance and repair work on heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment in buildings as well as plumbing and electrical systems; check, service and repair mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and heating equipment; perform semi-skilled or skilled plumbing work; install electrical wiring and fixtures; assist in the performance of preventative maintenance duties under the direction of Maintenance Worker Lead; cut and thread pipes. Build forms for retaining walls, walkways, curbs and lay cement and bricks. Keep drainage systems clear and in working order. May construct, install and repair partitions, shelving, doors, windows, roofs and floors; may supervise and train inmate crews. Requisition supplies and materials. Maintain records to reflect time and material utilizing computer generated work order system.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

    Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment or in the construction building trades.

    Knowledge of: Basic maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical systems and equipment; carpentry, plumbing, pipefitting, and masonry including proper tools; math sufficient to use precision measuring instruments such as caliper and micrometers; boilers sufficient to maintain and repair.

    Skill/Ability to: Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers; read, understand and use maintenance instruction manuals and blueprints; organize work in proper step-by-step order; use manual and power hand tools; use drill presses, pipe threading machines, power saws and grinders; explain and interpret technical terms to lay persons; give and follow written and verbal instructions; use electrical testing equipment; observe safe work practices; observe customer service standards.

    Special Requirements : Applicants must undergo a law enforcement background investigation and receive clearance to work within Sheriff Department detention facilities and maintain that clearance for the duration of employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.

    DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions. An Employment Eligibility Verification using E-Verify may be required on the first day of employment for some positions. Some job classes may also require a physical exam.

    Benefit Amount: An annualbenefit amountis provided and may be applied towards health insurance premiums (medical, dental, vision andlife).This benefit is pro-rated and paid on a pay period basis (24 pay periods).

    Health Insurance: A choice of PPO and HMOmedical plans which include PPOand HMO dental plans andinclude dentalandvision coverage. Dependent coverage is available. Providers include Anthem Blue Cross, Kaiser Permanente, Delta Dental, andVision Services Plan (VSP).

    Retirement:
    The retirement plan is a defined benefit plan administered pursuant to the 1937 Act County Employees Retirement Act and integrated with Social Security. In addition to ordinary retirement benefits, the plan provides disability and death benefits. Retirement contributions are made by both the County and the employee. The County has reciprocity with the State of California, contracting PERS agencies, and all County 1937 Act Retirement Systems.

    Paid Holiday Leave: 12 set days and 1 personal holiday.

    Vacation Accrual:

    2 weeks per year (0-3 years of service)
    3 weeks per year (3-7 years of service)
    4 weeks per year (7-11 years of service)
    5 weeks per year (11+ years of service)
    Limit of 300 hours.

    Sick Leave Accrual: 12 days per year with unlimited accumulation, 50 hours of which may be used toward family sick leave.

    Group Term Life Insurance and AD&D: $10,000; Provided by Standard Insurance Company.

    Disability Insurance:
    Employees are covered by State Disability Insurance. The premium is paid by the employee.

    Deferred Compensation: A voluntary deferred compensation plan is available.
