    The City of Newport Beach Fire Department (NBFD) is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Firefighter! NBFD provides fire protection, EMS, and life safety services to our community. We protect a city of 85,000 residents that grows to more than 100,000 individuals with summer tourism. The NBFD prides itself on its ability to handle all types of emergencies within our city while still providing mutual aid to major incidents across the state.

    SELECTION COMPONENTS

    Application Evaluation:
    • Applicants must attach the six required documents to their online application.

    • No walk-ins permitted.
    • Failure to follow these instructions will result in disqualification.


    Required Documents to Attach to the Online Application
    1) High School diploma/GED or college degree (transcripts showing equivalency will be accepted). 2) Certification by the California State Board of Fire Services as a Certified Firefighter I, proof of successful completion of a California State Board of Fire Services Firefighter I approved basic fire training curriculum consisting of 240 hours of instruction in basic firefighting, IFSAC Firefighter 1 certificate, or Pro Board Firefighter 1 certificate. 3) Current EMT-1 or EMT-P certification per California Administrative Code. 4) Valid driver's license. 5) Current BLS for Healthcare Providers Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and AED certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross). 6) Copy of CPAT or Biddle PAT certification completed within the last 20 months (May 2023 - January 2025). Candidates who do not submit the six required documents with their online application will be disqualified during the application screening and will not be allowed to continue in the process.

    RECRUITMENT TIMELINE
    Application Evaluation: This recruitment will remain open until January 27, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. The first 100 completed application packages that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the online exam. Online Exam: Tentatively scheduled on March 3, 2025. Top scoring candidates will be invited to the ocean swim test Ocean Swim Test: Tentatively scheduled on March 19, 2025. Passing candidates will be invited to the oral interview. Oral Interview: Tentatively scheduled on April 2, 2025 . Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur. Those applicants with disabilities requiring reasonable accommodation for any portion of the testing process must notify the Human Resources Department at least five days in advance of the test

    RETIREMENT

    The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement Systems (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 13.5% of their pay towards the retirement benefit.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    At the conclusion of the testing process, successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list. Candidates may proceed to a Fire Chief's oral after the list is approved. Appointments will be made in accordance with Civil Service rules. All candidates will undergo an extensive background process including polygraph, criminal history, driving record, military history, civil records check, past & current employers, drug & alcohol abuse, education, and reference contacts. Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation may be selected for a position and receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon psychological and medical examinations including urine drug screen by City selected medical professionals. After all elements of the testing process have concluded and the eligibility list is established, v eterans shall have preference over other identically qualified applicants for appointment to an entry-level position in the City.

    STATION VISITS

    Station visits or contact of NBFD personnel are NOT permitted during the recruitment process for testing preparations. Candidates attempting to contact a Newport Beach Fire Station during the recruitment process will be subject to disqualification.

    *Candidates hired after January 1, 2019 per the Fire Association MOU are required to live within 150 miles of the City limits.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience: Minimum eighteen (18) years of age.

    Education: High School graduation or GED equivalency.

    License/Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required. Ability to obtain a California firefighter restrictive driver's license.

    Certification by the California State Board of Fire Services as a Certified Firefighter I, successful completion of a California State Board of Fire Services Firefighter I approved basic fire training curriculum consisting of 240 hours of instruction in basic firefighting, IFSAC Firefighter 1 certificate, or Pro Board Firefighter 1 certificate.

    Additional Requirement: Prior to employment, the prospective candidate must successfully complete a thorough background review, including being fingerprinted by Newport Beach Police Department. The resulting report of your conviction history, (if any), will be evaluated along with the other information received in connection with your application. Except as otherwise required by law, a criminal conviction will not necessarily disqualify you from the position. The nature, date, surrounding circumstances, and the relevance of the offense to the position applied for may, however, be considered.

    Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Newport Beach Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.
