  • Job Description

    The City of Irvine is seeking a skilled and experienced City Traffic Engineer/Traffic Engineering Manager to lead the Traffic Engineering, and Traffic Management Center Divisions within the Public Works & Sustainability Department. This is a critical leadership role where you will shape the City's transportation infrastructure and ensure the effective delivery of services that enhance the quality of life for Irvine residents.

    Your Impact
    • Lead and provide oversight to the City's traffic engineering and traffic management functions.
    • Manage the review and implementation of traffic engineering initiatives and projects.
    • Provide guidance and develop solutions for traffic safety matters.
    • Direct the operations of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) and related capital projects.
    • Provide input on local arterial signal operations and multijurisdictional signal coordination efforts.
    • Represent the City at meetings with elected and appointed City officials, community stakeholders and residents.
    • Interact and coordinate with local, state and regional agencies and the public.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Engineering, Transportation, Planning, or a related field with six (6 years of increasingly responsible experience in a broad range of public works programs in a public or private agency, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
    • California registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is required.
    • California registration as a Traffic Engineer (TE), or ability to obtain within one year of employment , is required.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver license.
    Desirable Qualifications
    • Master's degree

    • Bachelor's degree in civil or traffic engineering or a related field.
    • Six years of increasingly responsible traffic and transportation experience, preferably with a municipal organization.
    • California registration as a Professional Engineer is required.
    • California registration as a Traffic Engineer or the ability to obtain within one year of employment, is required.
    • Strong technical background in traffic engineering and operations, including signing and striping and traffic control plans.
    • Excellent written and oral communication and supervisory skills.
    • Proven track record of leading a dynamic and professional team.
    • Ability to foster a high performing, team oriented and positive environment.
    • Strong understanding of local, state, federal laws and standards including California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control and California Vehicle Code.
    • Political awareness to appropriately address complex issues in a public setting.
    • Expertise with engineering design and review practices focused on traffic safety for all roadway users and sensitivity to liability, best practices and innovation.
    • Knowledge of signal systems operations.
    • Ability to develop and implement innovative traffic solutions that provide for expanded mobility options.

    The Process
