    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    The Street Maintenance Worker I/II position performs semi-skilled to skilled labor involving operation of light and commercial vehicles, machinery, and hand and power tools in public works maintenance and construction. Work requires considerable physical exertion and is often performed outdoors under severe working conditions. Operating Hours for this position are Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is a mandatory requirement of this position to work overtime, take weekend duty, and be on call for emergency work such as snow removal, water breaks, and sewer backups.Applicants must be able to respond to the Westminster Municipal Service Center within 30 to 45 minutes when on call. This is a safety-sensitive position.

    The 2025 hiring range for this position will be $47,989 - $54,288 per year based on experience and qualifications.

    The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage, and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Tasks
    1. Operates heavy and light construction equipment, including:
    • Tandems and single axle dump trucks
    • Snow plows
    • Spreaders
    • Line grinders
    • Plate compactors
    • Asphalt rollers
    • Concrete saws
    • Crack sealers
    • Backpack blowers
    • Gas and electric powered equipment
    • Hand tools
    • Other equipment as required
    2. Performs street maintenance duties, including:
    • Patching road surfaces
    • Building and setting forms
    • Pouring and finishing concrete
    • Constructing, maintaining, and repairing of curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and culverts
    3. Performs work safely, including:
    • Operating City vehicle
    • Maintaining CDL Class A
    • Maintaining safe driving record
    4. Maintenance Worker II may operate as a lead over work crew, including:
    • Organizing, training and supervising patching and crack sealing maintenance and repair
    5. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
    Other Duties and Responsibilities
    1. May perform painting, carpentry and masonry work
    2. May be required to perform Maintenance Worker duties from other primary assignment areas, including but not limited to, traffic signs and markings, and Utilities Operations (water distribution and wastewater collection)
    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
    Required :
    • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED
    • Experience in safe operation of tools, equipment, and light vehicles
    • Experience in construction/maintenance and repair work
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
    • Ability to obtain and maintain Commercial Driver License Class A within 90 days of employment (training provided by City of Westminster)
    Preferred :
    • Previous work experience in Street Maintenance and the operation of related equipment
    • Two (2) or more years of experience in the construction/maintenance trades and/or street maintenance
    • Previous experience with CDL driving and/or commercial snow removal
    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

    Progression to Street Maintenance Worker II is dependent on satisfactory performance with the City as a Street Maintenance Worker I in addition to meeting all minimum requirements of the Street Maintenance Worker I position. Prior outside experience may be considered toward meeting these requirements with the City of Westminster.

    Physical Requirements
    This position is physical in nature and requires sufficient physical strength and stamina to:
    • Frequently sit while driving to and from work sites and frequently stand and walk on uneven terrain
    • Frequently crouch/squat, bend/twist and kneel in awkward confined spaces; frequently climb ladders, equipment and trenches; occasionally climb/balance stairs and fences
    • Frequent light grasp and reaching; occasional firm grasp and fine motor functions to handle tools and material
    • Constant near/far acuity and hearing to safely perform duties and perform office tasks
    • Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds from ground to waist to move manhole covers; Occasional lifting of up to eighty (80) pounds from ground to shoulder to move cement bags and equipment and occasional lifting of forty (40) pounds overhead; occasional carrying and pushing/pulling of up to 100 pounds twenty (20) feet to lift and move manhole covers

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Occasionally performs work indoors and constantly outdoors with frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Performs maintenance and repair work year round on busy city streets where loud noise and traffic may cause a distraction. Work is very physical in nature and requires a great amount of physical exertion in extreme conditions while working with material that exceeds 450 degrees Fahrenheit. On-call duty is also required for emergency maintenance and snow removal.

    Required Materials and Equipment
    Heavy and light construction vehicles and equipment including tandem and single axle dump trucks with snow plow and spreader, asphalt roller, line grinder, plate compactor, concrete saw, crack sealer, back pack blower, gas and electric powered equipment, jack hammer, generators, pumps, hand tools, construction materials, or supplies or any other related vehicles, equipment or tools. Personal protection equipment such as hardhat, steel-toed boots, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves and ear protection. General office equipment including a personal computer, telephone, radio, copier, and fax machine.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
    • Background check including employment references, criminal history, and driving record review
    • If current CDL holder DOT questionnaire (Form 49 CFR part 40 Drug and Alcohol Testing) and required background check will be submitted to previous employer for the past two years

    The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.

    401(a) Contribution Rates:
    Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.
    Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.

    Employer Contribution Vesting Schedule
    • Less than 3 years - 0%
    • 3 to 4 years - 60%
    • 4 to 5 years - 80%
    • Over 5 years - 100%
    • For employees age 55 and older, the employer contributions are 100% vested
