This is for internal purposes, open only to designated individuals invited to participate in this application process.*The Airport Fire Equipment Operator performs various firefighting and Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) duties involving the operation of assigned vehicles and firefighting equipment. Oversees and assists with the maintenance of firefighting equipment and firefighting vehicles.
The Airport Fire Equipment Operator performs more technical and skilled tasks related to the assigned area. This is the journey level class, and the incumbent is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and driving of fire apparatus in response to fire and other incidents. The Airport Fire Equipment Operator is responsible for delivering effective fire streams through accurate hydraulic calculations and the transition between single and multiple hose lines on the fire ground.
Examples of Essential Functions- Respond to all aircraft emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, confined space, and structural alarms; and connect hoses to hydrants; operate firefighting equipment, pumps, and related tools and equipment.
- Drives emergency apparatus and other emergency vehicles used in the transport of equipment and personnel in response to fire, rescue, emergency medical, hazardous material, and other public service alarms.
- Responds to fires and other emergency or public assistance incidents in a timely, safe, and skilled manner; participates in the control through hose laying, ladder operation, ventilation, extinguishment, extrication, salvage, and other activities as part of a team effort.
- Operates pumps and other fire apparatus ensuring that water flows in sufficient quantity and pressure for application at the scene of fires and hazardous material incidents.
- Ensures apparatus and assigned equipment is response ready.
- Inspects, cleans, and maintains firefighting equipment and apparatus and is responsible for hose and other equipment being replaced on fire apparatus after being cleaned.
- Inspect aircraft refueling vehicles and storage areas in accordance with the Uniform Fire Code, NFPA, and FAA directives.
- Assist in clearing disabled aircraft from active runway; disarm military aircraft ejection seats.
- Perform salvage operations and place waterproof covers on materials subject to water damage.
- Reports malfunctioning of apparatus and other equipment to a maintenance mechanic and supervisor.
- Maintains inventory and maintenance records of apparatus and equipment; conducts regular inspections to ensure the availability of adequate supplies and proper condition of fire suppression and emergency medical items; tests and maintains firefighting and emergency medical equipment, preserving proper condition and suitability for service.
- Prepares and maintains records, maps, files, and reports.
- Administers basic and/or intermediate life support and first aid as needed; rescues those in need of assistance and aid.
- Ensures that assigned personnel perform duties and responsibilities in a safe and prudent manner which does not expose them or others to unnecessary harm or risk of on-the-job injury.; supervises activities at the scene of an emergency in the absence of a supervisor.
- Assists with maintaining the fire station in a clean and orderly condition.
- Inspects buildings, checks fire escapes, exists, electric wiring and connections, and other possible fire hazards to determine compliance with pre prevention codes and ordinances.
- Performs other duties as required.

Appointment and Certification: Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
