    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    The Engineering Department is seeking an experienced Land Surveyor to supervise a land survey crew engaged in performing a variety of field engineering surveys. The principal function of the Land Surveyor is to conduct a variety of semi-professional surveying tasks including serving as crew chief, operating survey equipment, performing calculations, and preparing survey documents.

    Ideal candidates will have experience:
    - Conducting land surveys
    - Operating technical tools and software such as CADD
    - Serving as a team lead or crew chief

    Acceptable Experience and Training

    • Graduation from high school, or possession of a GED, and
    • Four years of experience in field survey work. Or
    • An equivalent combination in which each two years of additional experience may be substituted for one year of education, or one year of additional technical education may be substituted for one year of experience.

    Required Special Qualifications

    • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen; and
    • Possess a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.


    Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

    • Make field survey crew assignments;
    • Operates various survey instruments and recorders, to determine lines, angles, distances, elevations, etc and instructs other crew members in their operation;
    • Instructs subordinates on important details of assignment, plus check field notes and computations submitted by party members for completeness and accuracy;
    • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
    • Ability to operate wide variety of current survey equipment, such as levels, total stations, GPS's and other instrumentation as technology changes;
    • Performs simple engineering and surveying drafting duties as directed;
    • Keep proper field notes showing distances, angles, benchmarks, etc; checks work for completeness and accuracy;
    • Make sketches of surveys, keep survey records, and train subordinates on how to do the same;
    • Perform and assign routine manual work including clearing the line of sight, locating monuments and setting stakes and hubs;.
    • Performs land surveys and performs surveying duties associated with civic construction projects;
    • Researches property records at the County and City to help determine land property boundaries;
    • Interprets various legal documents on land ownership and incorporates findings into property descriptions;
    • Enters survey instrument data into appropriate computer software, checks and edits, before sending job to project manager.
