    Job Classification: Student Services Professional II

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,841 - $5,224 per month

    Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm, unless notified otherwise

    THE DEPARTMENT

    The Office of Student Success provides leadership for multiple units focused on meeting the needs of Cal Poly Pomona's diverse student body. The Office of Student Success oversees the coordination of academic advising initiatives to achieve shared goals, and the development and implementation of academic intervention programs to help students make timely progress toward degree completion. Student Success provides oversight for academic and student success as related to academic policies, university advising, academic-related initiatives, and strategic planning. The office handles student petitions related to academic issues, including general academic petitions, retroactive withdrawals, grade appeals, academic renewal, and records the completion of culminating experiences. Student Success provides oversight for University Advising, the Bronco Advising Center, Student Communication, Advising Technology, Undeclared Advising, Early Alerts Programs, Graduation Pledge Programs, the Ear1y Start Program, the Learning Resource Center; Bronco Tutoring; First Year Experience (FYE); Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Students United to Create a Community for Engineering and Science Success (STEM SUCCESS); Reading, Advising, and Mentoring Program (RAMP); and the University Writing Center. The office of Student Success collaborates with Academic Program, Enrollment Management Services, and College leaders to support students in meeting their academic goals.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    NACADA Core Competencies (NCC): Refers to foundational elements of academic advising. The following tasks align with these competencies to ensure a holistic and effective approach to student support and academic success.

    Student Advisement

    • Provide timely, focused, and holistic advising to students to ensure that they stay on track to graduation and successfully navigate university policies and procedures to meet their academic and career goals.

    • Utilize high-level analytical and interpersonal skills and independent judgment to develop effective and creative solutions to student problems. Work with students (and parents, when appropriate) to explain complex university policies, identify student needs, and provide direction in helping students obtain resources and navigate challenges.

    • Provide one-on-one, group, and online advising to a broad range of students, including freshmen through seniors, students in academic difficulty, CA Promise students, and those identified via early alerts or graduation initiatives. Place and remove registration holds.

    • Partner with the Office of Student Success on early alert strategies and interventions, including advising campaigns, progress reports, success markers, and GI 2025 campaigns. Participate in special projects such as Summer Completion and student re-enrollment. Develop and deploy resources and strategies specific to the College's student needs.

    • Collaborate with a broad range of institutional partners, including College Associate Deans, Department Chairs, faculty, and staff, as well as the Office of Student Success, Bronco Advising Center, University Advising, the Registrar's Office, and supplemental advising programs (e.g., Athletics, International Center, Kellogg Honors College, and CA Promise).

    • Use e-advising tools such as CPP Connect (scheduling, note-taking, planner), Degree Progress Report, curriculum sheets, roadmaps, Schedule Builder, semester conversion tools, and others to educate students on academic planning.

    • Maintain current knowledge of academic, admission, and registration policies and procedures.

    • Provide accurate and timely maintenance of student petitions.

    • Serve students in various modalities (e.g., hybrid environment) while aligning with CPP Telecommuting Program principles, Academic Affairs standards, and divisional values.

    Campus and College Programs and Projects

    • Actively participate in the College and University advising community by regularly attending Academic Advisor Council meetings, trainings, webinars, and workshops.

    • Participate in supplemental advising committees and working groups. Serve as an active member of the College-based Student Success Team, providing expert knowledge to identify and explore solutions and interventions to improve student outcomes.

    • Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments to provide updates on procedures and policies, review curriculum information, and communicate it to students. Provide professional advice to department chairs and faculty regarding student issues.

    Documentation and Reporting

    • Provide robust documentation of advising interactions, interventions, and programming via CPP Connect and other tools. Summarize all information in annual reports and provide data-informed recommendations for improvements.

    • Utilize reporting tools such as CPP Connect (powered by the Education Advisory Board [EAB]), DataWarehouse, and Tableau to identify students in need of support and track progress toward improving their academic outcomes.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Combination - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

    • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the professional experience.

    • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.

    • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.

    • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

    • Ability to:

    o Interpret and apply program rules and regulations, using initiative and resourcefulness to plan work assignments and implement long-range improvements.

    o Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews and reason logically.

    o Collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data, making verbal or written presentations based on these findings.

    o Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters.

    o Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed, and multi-aged value systems, working accordingly.

    o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies, and others in committee work, student advising, and community contacts.

    o Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of the campus to which assigned.

    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications regarding other program or service areas Services Office.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

    • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the programs.

    • Ability to:

    o Collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data, making verbal or written presentations based on these data.

    o Interpret and explain complex policies and procedures to students, parents, and faculty members in a highly professional

    manner. Interpret and apply program rules/regulations, use initiative in planning work assignments, and implement long-range program improvements.

    o Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews and reason logically.

    o Plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities.

    o Interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public, analyzing complex situations and adopting effective courses of action.

    o Advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters, completing assignments without detailed instructions.

    o Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals while acquiring knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.

    • Master's degree.

    • Familiarity with the CSU system.

    • Experience in higher education in student services, academic advising, and/or career advising.

    • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research and interview techniques.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    CSU Classification Salary Range

    This position is part of the APC bargaining unit 4. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website.The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4,841 and maximum $6,884 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.
