    Minimum Qualifications
    Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus eight (8) years experience in construction, repair of roads, bridges, and drainage maintenance related to streets alleys, including at least four (4) years in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Or

    Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field of coursework related to Business or other related fields and four (4) years experience in an area related to the individual job at least two (2) of which have been in a supervisory capacity.
    OR
    Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

    Licenses or Certifications:

    This position requires a Texas Operator Driver’s License

    Physical Requirements:

    Frequent standing sitting, walking, driving, good vision and hearing, manual dexterity and mobility, able to lift and carry 90lbs, and occasionally perform manual labor.

    Position Description:
    The Street and Drainage Superintendent in the District Maintenance Division leads a team of 20-30 staff within Street and Bridge Operations, part of the Transportation and Public Works Department. This includes overseeing both proactive and reactive right-of-way ( ROW ) work, managing operations to address urgent issues like damaged infrastructure and debris, while also coordinating scheduled maintenance and improvement projects to ensure the ROW remains safe, functional, and compliant with regulations.

    A key responsibility is leading emergency response efforts during critical incidents, ensuring rapid action to mitigate public safety hazards. The Street and Drainage Superintendent plans, prioritizes, and schedules work, efficiently allocating resources to balance immediate needs with long-term objectives. The role requires collaboration with internal teams, contractors, and external stakeholders, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and high-quality service. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills are essential for achieving successful operations and supporting the mission of “maintaining infrastructure to keep Austin moving.”



    Essential Employee:

    This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

This may include filling other vacancies with the same job title in other division/work locations within the City of Austin Public Works Department. Decisions on assigned selection may be made at the time of hire based on the business needs of the department.

    Driving:

    Pay Range
    $33.49 - $42.71

Experience using work order management software Experience in overseeing and managing operating budgets. Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


    1. Develops and manages road maintenance programs and program elements including; reconstruction, surface maintenance, traffic control, drainage, alley maintenance bridge maintenance right of way maintenance, and customer service requests ( CSR ).
    2. Determines and prepares program objectives, schedules repair cost for each element including the availability of resources required to meet the annual work plan objectives.
    3. Responsible for the project management in assigned programs and program elements including documentation of project duration and resources utilized. Reviews and schedules recourse assignments to program elements.
    5. Evaluates program objectives and documents alternatives or modifications; communicate changes to staff and oversees implementation of changes.
    6. Communicates and coordinates with superintendents, and other supervisors regarding personnel, equipment, and materials.
    7. Oversees and manages the inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment to ensure an adequate quantity is available for their planned work.
    8. Evaluates road and right of way conditions and makes independent decisions regarding method, material, or extent of repair. Conducts independent inspections of project for quality control.
    9. Communicates and responds to issues or concerns of constituents, other department and public and private entities. Answer questions or concerns from the public.
    10. Prepares correspondence and reports. Reviews daily work sheets, equipment sheets, accident, safety and incident documentation
