    Role

    Preference of qualified candidates to have four (4) years' experience as a journeyman plumber.

    Under general supervision, performs skilled plumbing work of considerable difficulty in maintenance, repair and installation of all types of plumbing, domestic water systems, and related devices in the upkeep of County facilities and equipment.

    Major Duties, Responsibilities

    • Oversees and performs troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of plumbing equipment including faucets, grease traps, flush valves, sinks, water heaters, commodes, drinking fountains, domestic water heater pumps, flush meters, backflow prevention devices and valves and water meters.
    • Performs and oversees the performance of preventative maintenance inspections and repairs in all County facilities including, but not limited to, domestic water systems and related devices and sanitary waste drainage systems.
    • Responds to emergency plumbing calls such as clogged drains, broken water lines, and frozen pipes. Evaluates situation and takes proper corrective action.
    • Oversees and installs new plumbing fixtures and related devices including sinks, commodes, urinals, faucets, drinking fountains (excluding electrical connections), domestic water heaters, and related devices.
    • Reviews layouts and interfaces for renovations and upgrades, including domestic hot and cold water, gas and sanitary piping for kitchens, drinking fountains, and restrooms.
    • Oversees contractors under contract to the Facilities Department.
    • Performs acceptance inspections for contractor performed work of new construction and renovations.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:
    A minimum of four (4) years of experience in plumbing.

    Additional Requirements:
    Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
    State of Arizona Backflow Assembly Tester Certification.

    Other Skills

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

    • Methods, practices, tools, equipment, and materials of the plumbing trade.
    • Plumbing regulations and ability to interpret plumbing codes and schematics.
    • Standards and regulations pertaining to the repair and replacement of plumbing equipment.
    • Design and draft various plumbing system layouts.
    • Trade specific hand tools, motorized snakes, pipe threading, piping inspection tools and County maintenance vehicles.
    • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
    • Clerical office practices and procedures.
    • Research techniques and report writing.
    • Current Microsoft Office software.
    • Filing and recordkeeping.

    Skill in:
    • Maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and repairs of plumbing systems.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Organization and adherence to detail.

    Ability to:
    • Interpret plumbing codes and schematics.
    • Read plans, schematics, specifications, and drawings.
    • Estimate labor or material costs from work plans.
    • Install, reconfigure, and repair a variety of plumbing fixtures.
    • Work in jail environment and around inmates in secured areas. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
    • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
    • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
    • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
    • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

    Work Environment:
    The work environment is associated with various indoor and outdoor locations, in all weather conditions and includes exposure to loud noise, blood borne pathogens, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals.

    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; move, lift, push, pull a variety of heavy objects; mix and work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, or similar solutions using normal protective equipment; remain in a standing position for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
