    Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduation with an Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Engineering Technology, or in a field related to the job, plus five (5) years of experience in maintenance of electrical generating equipment and facilities, including two (2) years of experience which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
    • Related experience may substitute for education up to two (2) years.

    This position will lead a team of maintenance personnel at the Sand Hill Energy Center, a 600 Megawatt Facility. This position will be in charge of the Maintenance O&M budget at Sand Hill. and will oversee all gas turbine, steam turbine and auxiliary maintenance repairs, outage planning and scheduling, warehouse. This position is essential and may require long hours and during weather events may be sequestered onsite.

    This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

    The Power plant is a 24/7 operation. Work hours may change according to departmental needs. Work hours may include after core hours of operation, holidays, and weekends.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of crews involved in the modification, maintenance, and repair of generator, turbine, boiler, and auxiliary power plant electrical or mechanical systems. Receives and reviews work orders, prints, and sketches for overhaul and modification of electrical systems, power generation systems, and auxiliary equipment. Reviews prints after work has been completed to ensure master file is complete and accurate. Makes periodic plant inspections to ensure work is performed in accordance with established safety procedures. Coordinates maintenance activities with operations personnel to minimize down time. Consults with engineer and manufacturer representatives on designs or procedural changes for improving efficiency and reliability. Authorizes purchases and payments for required equipment and services. Interprets departmental policy and initiates personnel actions.

    Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in repairing and maintaining power plant equipment and facilities.
    • Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures, and regulations applicable to work being performed in general and in/near energized electrical systems.
    • Knowledge of boiler, turbine, and generator controls in a power plant environment.
    • Knowledge of electric and electronic schematics and systems.
    • Knowledge of program management techniques.
    • Knowledge of contract language and purchasing policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of various auxiliary controls related to power production.
    • Knowledge of engineering terminology, symbols, calculations, and drawings.
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of engineering disciplines relevant to electric generation.
    • Knowledge of supervisory and management techniques.
    • Skill in effectively planning and prioritizing complex construction, maintenance, and repair operations.
    • Skill in operating precision measurement and calibration equipment.
    • Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
    • Skill in reading, interpreting, and understanding drawings, blueprints, plans, and specifications.
    • Ability to troubleshoot complete control systems down to malfunctioning components.
    • Ability to direct the work of technicians maintaining and repairing power plant equipment and systems.
    • Ability to exercise balanced judgment in evaluation situations and in making decisions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with City employees and the public.
