  • Job Description

    Full-time position available with the Office of the City Manager, City Communications Division located at 2400 Troost
    Salary Range: $4,619-$6,928/Month
    Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

    Responsibilities

    • Leads the Health Department's communications efforts, managing media relations, digital content creation, and public outreach.
    • Develops and implements strategies that showcase the department's programs, services, and initiatives while aligning with the City's overarching communication goals.
    • Manages public health campaigns to emergency response communication that directly contributes to improving the lives of Kansas City residents.
    • Drafts and distributes press releases.
    • Serves as the department spokesperson in print and on-camera interviews and cultivates relationships with media outlets to ensure accurate and timely reporting on health-related matters.
    • Develops and executes comprehensive communication strategies that highlight the department's programs, initiatives, and achievements while ensuring alignment with the City's broader messaging goals.
    • Writes, edits, and publishes a variety of content, including website articles, social media posts, newsletters, and health campaign materials, tailored to diverse audiences.
    • Develops and implements a social media strategy to engage residents on public health topics, promotes services, and increases awareness of health initiatives.
    • Plans and coordinates community events, public hearings, and press conferences to engage the public and stakeholders on health-related issues.
    • Serves as a key point of contact for health-related crises, providing accurate and timely information to the public, media, and other stakeholders.
    • Captures and edits basic photos and videos to enhance storytelling and outreach efforts, using in-phone or desktop editing tools.
    • Partners with health program leaders, City departments, and community organizations to amplify the department's impact and reach.
    • Manages multiple high-profile projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met.



    Qualifications

    REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree and 3 years of professional experience in business or public sector administration to include at least 2 years performing administrative and/or supervisory work involving more complex projects or programs; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience with at least 2 years performing administrative and/or supervisory work involving more complex projects or programs. Preference given to candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish, and have familiarity with health equity and culturally competent communication practices; for a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Public Health, or a related field and a minimum of 3 years in a communications role within news media, public relations, government, or a similar field, and/or prior experience in public health communications.

    Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

    The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
    For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
    Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

    If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
