GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
Under the direction of the Hunter Education Manager, this position performs highly advanced (senior-level) training and development work and is responsible for conducting and coordinating mandatory hunter education programs (Section 62.014 P&W Code) throughout one of five regions in Texas (W, SE, S, N and C). Often, playing the lead role in R3 (Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation) Hunting and Shooting Sports strategies in the region (TPWD R3 Plan). Position is called upon to develop and/or modify training design based on need and the analysis of success, instructor input and need to expand the advanced hunter education curricula entitled Hunting 101s. Handles hundreds of queries monthly from the public seeking hunter education courses, address changes, and student and instructor assistance with the mandatory program requirements and with game laws and hunting seasons. Oversees the development and evaluation of hunter education student and instructor coursework. Performs formal and informal educational and outreach functions for the Hunter Education program on behalf of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, as well as similar functions for resource division staffs. Sets regional priorities based upon the goals and strategies outlined in the hunter education instructor manual and Program SOP. Assist directly with goals of two subgrantees - Texas Wildlife Association's Youth Hunting and Adult Learn to Hunt programs and Texas AgriLife Extension's 4-H Program. This position will play a large role in the Agency's transition to better support the public shooting sports community. While this position will move away from hosting in-person events, it will work through a contracted employee(s) to perpetuate existing relationships with competitive shooting partners, while also expanding the public's awareness of and opportunity to participate in shooting sports and facilitate awareness of target range grants. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Works with heavy equipment (e.g., trailers, UHVs, trap throwers, firearms, and related equipment) and performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.
Experience :
Three years experience in Natural Resource Education, Outdoor Recreation, Volunteer Management or teaching Shooting, Archery, Physical Education or Agriculture Science.
One year experience with participating in or hosting competitive firearm shooting events.
Licensure :
Must possess a valid State driver's license.
Must possess a Hunter Education Certification (Hunter Ed ID student number required with application)
Must possess or be able to obtain, within 6 months of employment, the following certifications:
- NRA/ATA/NSSA/NSCA or Similar Rating in at least one discipline (e.g., RSO, Rifle, Shotgun, Handgun, etc.).
- National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) Basic Archery Instructor (BAI).
- SAR Basic Air Rifle Instructor.
NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license and certifications.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :
Education :
One additional year of the required experience in Natural Resource Education, Outdoor Recreation, Volunteer Management or teaching Physical Education or Agriculture Science may substitute for 30 hours of the required education or the degree field requirements, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.
Experience :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in Natural Resource Education, Outdoor Recreation, such as Park Administration, Biology, Education, Agriculture Science, Natural Resource Management, Conservation, Fisheries and Wildlife Management, may substitute for one year of the required experience in Natural Resource Education, Outdoor Recreation, Volunteer Management or teaching Physical Education or Agriculture Science.
