    DEPARTMENT: Department of Marine Transportation

    CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Maritime Vocational Lecturer

    TIMEBASE/POSITION TYPE: Full-time or Part-Time Non-Tenure Track

    APPROXIMATE STARTING DATE: January 02, 2025

    DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Department of Marine Transportation of the California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) invites applications for a maritime vocational lecturer to teach courses in tug and barge operations.

    Review of applications will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until filled. Applications received by close of business day on December 20, 2024 will receive priority consideration.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a non tenure-track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    Primary duty is teaching courses in tug and barge operations

    ADDITIONAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:
    • Teaching courses in shiphandling
    • Teaching courses in vessel maintenance and operations
    • Teaching courses in marine survival
    • Teaching other maritime courses, as needed
    • Grading student performance and assessing STCW competencies in a timely manner according to stipulated procedures

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • United States Coast Guard license as 500-ton (or higher) Master, Master of Towing Vessels
    • STCW compliant
    • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in a maritime or industry related field)
    • Significant experience in vessel operations

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master’s Degree (preferably in a maritime or industry related field)
    • Teaching experience
    • Ship and workboat (tugs, supply, ferries, etc.) experience and endorsements
    • Senior USCG unlimited license (chief mate or master)
    • Current or prior approval from US Coast Guard as a Designated Examiner (DE) - Near Coastal/Oceans

    SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensur ate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual. A full-time unit load for a lecturer is 15 teaching units, also called WTUs.
    • The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with the education and experience of the selected individual. The anticipated hiring range for full time will be between $6,000 - $7,000 per month, prorated based on unit load (WTUs).
    • The CSU Salary range for this classification: $5,497 - $8,471 per month

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
    • A pre-employment physical is required as are subsequent USCG fitness physicals prior to each training cruise. The incumbent must participate in a random drug-screening program as required by federal law
    • The person selected for the position will be required to follow all policies and procedures set forth by Cal Maritime both on-campus (land) as well as aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear.

    PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    • Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story building with elevator access.

    NOTE THE FOLLOWING REGARDING THE TRAINING SHIP GOLDEN BEAR'S (TSGB) PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS :
    • Work site aboard the training ship requires climbing up and down ship ladders and gangways; lifting and carrying material from pier to training ship; and occasional work in excess heat, cold, dampness or dry atmospheric conditions.
    • All mariners should be capable of living and working in cramped spaces on rolling vessels, maintaining balance on a moving deck, rapidly donning an exposure suit, stepping over doorsills of 24 inches in height, opening and closing watertight doors that may weigh up to 56 pounds, pulling heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. in weight, distances of up to 400 feet, climbing steep stairs or vertical ladders without assistance, participating in firefighting and lifesaving efforts, including wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and lifting/controlling fully charged fire hoses. Extended workdays are common.
