    $6,340 - $6,666 Per Month ($76,080.00 - $79,992 Annually)

    Salary is commensurate with experience.

    Position Summary

    Under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Case Management and the SAFE Place, the Residential Life Case Manager is responsible for the provision of critical support for students experiencing emotional or material challenges that negatively impact their well-being and ability to achieve academic success. The Residential Life Case Manager will provide mental health assessments, crisis management, triage, effective referrals, follow up, tracking, and continuity of care between campus departments and community resources. This position will mainly support students referred to the Residential Life Care Team and the SF State Action Care Team (ACT), but can support students referred by other programs. They will also work to coordinate services and communication with the campus case management team.

    They will collaboratively work with SF State’s Department of Case Management, Student Housing Office; Guardian Scholars Program; Basic Needs Initiatives, Student Health Services (SHS), Counseling & Psychological Services, and others to holistically support students, and keep them on track for academic success and retention. The Case Manager is also responsible for developing functional relationships with community organizations to create and maintain an accessible database of current community resources and referral processes across the Bay Area related to basic needs and welfare services, social services, and community mental health resources. This position also works closely leading Programming Assistants to provide educational content to the residential community.

    Position Information

    Residential Life Case Management
    • Triage, respond, appropriately address and resolve crisis referrals from the Residential Life Care Team or Campus Care Team (ACT) during normal University business hours.
    • Assess the holistic needs of students in order to facilitate supports beyond immediate crisis in order to improve academic success and retention to the university.
    • Select and use appropriate clinical assessments and interventions, crisis management strategies and motivational interviewing in order to provide appropriate resources and consultation.
    • Provide case management for SF State resident students experiencing emotional or material challenges that negatively impact their well-being and ability to achieve academic success.
    • Work closely with department Care Team, ACT, Dean-on-Call providers, counselors, health care professionals, and psychiatrists to arrange for immediate care or dispositions for high-risk students, as well as after-care planning following hospitalization or emergency transports.
    • Facilitate, coordinate, track, and document continuity of care and referrals to on campus and local community health care and welfare resources.
    • Help facilitate students’ acquisition of appropriate needs external to campus resources. Build relationships with off-campus and city/county resources to bridge care and support for students.
    • Participate in and contribute to staff and case management meetings, professional development and division and university committees that promote student well-being.
    • Collaborate and consult with other campus departments to create a network of support for students of concern. Examples of partnerships may be: Student Housing Office, Disability Programs & Resource Center, EOP, the Division of Equity and Community Inclusion, Guardian Scholars, the Women’s Center, the Queers Trans Resource Center, and the Office of Student Activities & Events.

    Student Oversight
    • Plan, direct, support and evaluate the Residential Life student team members according to the objectives established for the department.
    • Assist with recruitment, selection, placement, evaluation, and personnel administration for area Residential Life professional/full-time and student team members.
    • Develop student leader team with particular focus on wellness related topics: Alcohol & Drugs, Sexual Health, Stress Management, Eating Disorders/Body Image, and the wellness wheel model.
    • Initiate weekly contact with individual student leaders to promote a sense of belonging, and to facilitate the growth and development of the individual student leaders. This includes, but is not limited to, leading a weekly meetings and maintaining regularly scheduled 1-1s.

    Maintenance of Records/Data/Outreach
    • Records: Prepare and maintain concise case records, reports and other documentation in Maxient, or other student tracking systems.
    • Records: Maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and laws.
    • Data: Maintain and analyze data to report on trends, frequency, duration, outcomes with regard to student needs and retention.
    • Outreach: Effectively coordinate on and off campus care and communications amongst all stakeholders helping to provide integrated service including care, accommodations, and support.
    • Outreach: Collaborate with stakeholders on how best to meet the health care and welfare needs of the SF State population.
    • Outreach Serve on committees and workgroups focused on wellness.

    Care Team Coordination
    • Organize and facilate the department CARE team meeting.
    • Assist with interpretation and implementation of Residential Life and University CARE policies and procedures.
    • Assist with triage, response, and next steps off Care Team incident reports and students of concern managed cases.
    • Follow up and provide support to meeting attendees managing care for students of concern related to next steps and presenting challenges.
    • Develop and maintain a database of campus, local community and private health and welfare resources.

    Training and Education
    • Develops and assists with events, social media posts, and community education that promotes mental, and emotional well-being and support resources on campus.
    • Develops and assists with department and in-hall training that builds skills in supporting students of concern and topics surround wellness: Case Management, Helping Skills, Listening Skills, Bystander Intervention
    • Trauma Informed Practices, Advocacy and Referrals, as well as wellness topics: Alcohol and Drugs, Suicidality/Ideation, Sexual Health; Eating Disorders/Body Image, and the wellness wheel model.
    • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and administration at the university in order to best serve students

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge and Abilities: The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification.

    Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.

    Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

    Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

    A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

    Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

    Live-in Requirement: This position is required to live on campus and participate in the after-hours response rotation which directly responds to student crisis and emergency situations as well as providing consult, advice, and direction to the student leader on-call team members. The incumbent works a 40-hour work week with varied shifts and times, including some evenings, weekends, and non traditional hours. The incumbent is provided a meal plan with a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 meals per week in City Eats Dining Center. The incumbent is expected to interact and engage in conversation with residents as part of the meal plan. The incumbent must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

    Due to the responsibilities and nature of this position, preferred qualifications that will lead to success in this role include:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Expertise in case management services
    • Knowledge of and experience identifying mental health and wellness issues that commonly affect students (e.g. anxiety, depression, individual and group conflict, substance abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and the sequelae of trauma, etc.).
    • Demonstrated ability in managing difficult and complex situations involving students.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with college age populations, and providing student services to communities with a diverse population of individuals from a wide variety of countries of origin; with multi-racial, ethnic and cultural identities; multi-gender and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) identities; disabilities; and a myriad of beliefs.
    • Strong crisis management skills
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively and empathetically communicate, interact and collaborate with peers, colleagues and clients.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish effective, collaborative relationships with individuals and groups providing services or advocating on behalf of students with mental health problems.
    • Demonstrated ability to use organizational skills to efficiently develop plans and implement goals.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop a strong working knowledge of campus, local community and private health and welfare resources.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with campus departments including Student Health Services, Dean of Students, Residential Life, Basic Needs, and the Action Care Team.

    Education and Experience:
    • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related human services field or Doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology and licensed in the State of California or eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipate start date.
    • A minimum of 3 years experience as a social worker, case manager, or mental health clinician.
    • Previous experience working with Care Teams, Basic Needs programs, or clients facing immediate crisis.
    • Experience in a multicultural, urban setting.

    REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

    Mental Health Certification: Incumbents should be certified or obtain certification within their first year in mental health support and services through:
    • Mental Health First Aid Organization
    • Another reputable organization approved by the department

    California Driver’s License: If incumbent is expected and approved to travel for business, a valid California driver’s license may be expected to be maintained.

    Environmental/Physical/Special

    The incumbent works a 40-hour work week with varied shifts and times, including some evenings, weekends, and nontraditional

    hours. The incumbent is provided a meal plan with a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 meals per week in
