    General Purpose

    Under general supervision, participates in the development and use of scenario-based, nursing skills education using mannequins and complex technical human patient simulations to create a realistic and stimulating learning environment for nursing students; and performs related duties as assigned.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

    • Sets up for simulation lab sessions including: computer hardware, software and network connectivity; high- or low-fidelity nursing mannequins programmed for specific nursing scenario simulations; associated instruments, drugs, solutions and supplies such as sharps and chuck pads and required simulated hospital room layout; matches instructor requests for mannequins and skills scenarios with available equipment; schedules use of lab and equipment; maintains and performs minor repairs on mannequins and other equipment.


    • Using computers and other technical equipment and software, runs simulations of nursing scenarios during skills labs; monitors progress of simulations and intervenes to restore network communication and resolve other problems; manually runs simulation equipment when necessary.


    • Provides orientation and advice to instructors on simulation laboratory procedures; demonstrates proper techniques, use of tools, operation of equipment and location and use of materials.


    • Participates in faculty development activities on simulation-based learning; participates in formulating new simulation exercises based on nursing curriculum and student- or faculty-identified needs and current clinical practice issues; participates in defining learning outcomes and storyboard scenes; participates in preparing scripts for characters and simulation paths; evaluates and recommends changes to simulation scenarios and procedures; develops and programs new scenarios or revisions to simulation scenarios; makes changes to default settings.


    • Sets up contracts for servicing and repair of mannequins and other simulation-related equipment; researches vendors for price and quality; prepares purchase requisitions for parts, materials and supplies.


    • Ensures the proper maintenance and cleanliness of simulation and skills laboratories to protect the health and safety of students, faculty and staff; oversees the cleaning and sanitizing of furniture, work surfaces, mannequins and other equipment.


    • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.



    OTHER DUTIES

    • Assists faculty in utilizing specialized School of Nursing technologies; troubleshoots and resolves problems or refers issues to Information Technology for resolution.


    • Stays current on technical and educational developments in the field of nursing simulation.


    • Performs related duties as assigned.


    Employment Standards / Minimum Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:

    • General principles and practices of nursing and the treatment and care of medical patients.


    • Current and emerging simulation instructional technologies and associated equipment, tools and products, including high- and low-fidelity mannequins and associated simulation and computer equipment.


    • Nursing and health care situations and their suitability for development and implementation of scenario-based simulation, web and e-learning applications and tools.


    • Methods and techniques in troubleshooting and resolving problems in simulation equipment, software and tools.


    • Basic human anatomy and physiology.


    • General methods and practices of student instruction applicable to a nursing skills laboratory environment.


    • Principles and practices of business and nursing communications includingcorrect English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.


    • Medical math.


    • Office practices and procedures, including recordkeeping.


    • District budgeting and purchasing policies, practices and procedures.


    • District environmental safety policies and procedures and safety methods and practices applicable to nursing skills and simulation laboratories including the safe storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biohazards in accordance with state and federal requirements.


    Skills and Abilities to:

    • Set up, maintain and resolve problems with simulation mannequins, equipment, tools and computers.


    • Apply sound learning theory and knowledge of real-life clinical health care situations to the development and modification of effective scenario-based exercises for nursing students.


    • Give clear, concise explanations of complex nursing concepts, practices and procedures to students.


    • Provide effective instructional support to faculty and guidance to students in subject-matter areas applicable to area of assignment.


    • Organize, set priorities and exercise sound, independent judgment within areas of responsibility.


    • Read, understand, interpret and apply department or District rules, policies, technical materials and federal and state law and regulations relating to the field.


    • Instruct or tutor students effectively to foster enthusiasm for learning; accurately, thoroughly and clearly answer students' subject-matter, equipment-use and technology questions.


    • Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.


    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.


    • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.


    • Maintain the confidentiality of department and student records and information.


    • Use tact, discretion, courtesy, empathy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult students and situations.


    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.



    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    An associate degree in nursing or a health care-related field and at least two years of progressively responsible experience in direct patient care in a health care-related environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Employees work under typical office and nursing laboratory conditions, and the noise level is moderately quiet. The employee may be required to travel to locations other than assigned work site and to adjust to work schedule changes and requirements to work overtime.
