    Out-of-Class experience will not be accepted for this examination.

    DEFINITION:
    Drives single unit trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
    Positions allocable to this class have responsibility for driving single unit trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. This responsibility includes picking up, transporting, and delivering material, supplies, equipment, and work crews between County facilities and other locations. Positions also operate various accessory equipment such as pumps and winches, check the operation of the trucks and make minor repairs, and participate in the loading and unloading of the trucks operated.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Drives heavy trucks hauling materials, supplies, and equipment.
    • Drives oil trucks equipped for spraying oil or bituminous emulsions on road surfaces, water trucks, and other types of tank vehicles.
    • Operates accessory equipment such as pumps, winches, snow plows, etc.
    • Transports work crews, materials, tools, and equipment to job locations and may participate in the work of a crew or assist in their supervision.
    • Inspects trucks to ensure conformance with safety regulations and practices and that they are properly serviced; performs routine preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments to truck and reports mechanical defects.
    • Loads and unloads trucks and may participate in the storing or moving of materials in warehouses or other buildings.
    • Ensures that truck is checked for preventive maintenance and repair and serviced.
    • Maintains records and prepares reports.
    • As needed bases pulls small trailer-mounted equipment such as generators, compressors, cement mixers, toolboxes, etc.
    • Occasionally drives combination trucks with trailer units of 6,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or more.


    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENT:

    One year of full-time experience driving trucks with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of at least 10,000 pounds, including experience in the operation of trucks with a GVWR of at least 26,001 pounds.

    LICENSE:

    A valid California unrestricted Class “A” Driver License with airbrake and tank endorsement, is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    4 - Arduous: this involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

    SPECIAL LICENSE REQUIRMENT INFORMATION:

    Successful applicants for this position must obtain and present a copy of their record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    The examination will consist of two (2) parts:

    PART I: A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted at 70%, assessing:
    • Achievement
    • Responsibility
    • Safety Orientation
    • Thoroughness
    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    PART II: An evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E), weighted at 30%, assessing:
    • Professional/Technical Knowledge of:
      • Operation of Heavy Trucks
      • Truck and Equipment Maintenance
      • Transportation and Driving Regulations
    Technology Application Applicants must meet the Selection Requirements and must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the combined scores for Parts I and II in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS:
    Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their scores automatically transferred to this examination. This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test scores may be transferred.

    TEST PREPARATION:
    Study guides and other test preparation resources are available to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides will help in preparing for the test, we advise you to review all related materials that you deem necessary.

    ELIGIBILTY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. No person may compete in this exam more than once in a twelve (12) month period.

    VACANCY INFORMATION:

    The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill Heavy Truck Driver vacancies within the Los Angeles County Fire Department as they occur.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT:
    Any shift - Appointees must be willing to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
