    What You'll Be Doing

    The Wake County Animal Center is seeking a compassionate, proactive, driven, and innovative individual for the foster technician role, supporting both the veterinary and foster programs at the shelter. This position will work closely with our foster coordinators and shelter veterinary team to manage medical and behavioral animals in foster homes. In this role, staff will follow established protocols to provide medical care for animals in foster, provide guidance and support for managing medical and behavioral problems to foster parents, develop educational material for foster families, and assist with gathering promotional materials and data for animals in need of foster homes.

    This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with foster parents, the foster coordinators, and veterinary team; as well as excellent proficiency with computer-based tasks including Microsoft Suite with emphasis on Excel and Outlook. We are looking for individuals that will develop strong relationships with the families providing care to over 250 animals in our foster program, and who will take initiative to develop educational materials to support these individuals.

    About Our Team

    Our veterinary team currently consists of 2 full time veterinarians, 1 relief veterinarian, and 5 veterinary assistants. We strive to provide high quality medical and surgical care for shelter animals, and have access to digital radiology, in-house CBC/serum biochemistry analysis, capacity for specialty surgeries in addition to spays/neuters, as well as the ability to refer for specialist care. We also work with local animal control agencies to provide case consultations, forensic exams, and expert witness testimony. Our foster team currently consists of 2 foster coordinators, and 1 foster technician. Environmental Services is comprised of divisions that provide outreach, collaborate with stakeholders, serve customers, and enforce regulations to protect our natural resources and increase community resiliency. Areas include: solid waste disposal, recycling, environmental education, soil erosion prevention, stormwater and floodplain management, watershed management plan review, animal shelter operation, and animal control. The Environmental Services Department advances planning in these areas to support Wake County for decades to come

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Nine months of experience in animal care and control
    • Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) - Must pass test/exam to become certified within 6 months of employment
    • Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV) - Must pass test/exam to become certified within 6 months of employment
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
