    Summary

    Minimum Starting Salary is $16.65 per hour

    THE CITY OF WACO SEEKS:
    A Zoo Maintenance Worker who likes being outside and has experience doing landscape work, cleaning grounds, and can perform light repair work. If you have a flexible schedule and can work shifts that include weekends and holidays and would take pride in keeping our Zoo clean, apply now!

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Required:
    • H.S. Diploma or GED
    • One year construction work of a semi-skilled nature Required
    • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License
    Position Overview
    Under basic supervision, performs maintenance of grounds and repairs of buildings, fixtures, structures, and equipment in private, public, and animal-populated areas of the City Zoo.

    Position Responsibilities
    • Performs semiskilled carpentry, and other semiskilled labor in constructing, repairing, and maintaining Zoo buildings, fixtures, structures, and equipment in private, public, and animal-populated areas of the Cameron Park Zoo; prepares surfaces and applies paint, cleaning fluids, varnish, and other protective materials as needed.
    • Performs building, structure, grounds, cage, or animal enclosure repairs and maintenance in exotic-animal-populated areas utilizing hand and power tools as needed.
    • Operates hand and power tools for cutting and removing trees, trimming shrubs, cleaning sidewalks, and removing debris from moats as directed.
    • Maintains the safe and efficient operation of equipment by sharpening blades; performing basic maintenance such as oiling parts, replacing filters, replenishing gasoline and oil, and repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts.
    • Operates light and medium-duty trucks to move equipment, materials, and debris.
    • Builds forms for concrete work; operates cement mixer to prepare concrete; finishes concrete surfaces.
    • Sets up tables, chairs, and related activities for Zoo special events.
    • Cleans restrooms and performs maintenance duties such as replacing lightbulbs, and towel dispensers; notifies supervisor of major repairs needed.
    • Repairs breaks and leaks in sprinkler systems; installs new sprinkler systems by laying and connecting sprinkler lines and heads in preparation for the plumber to connect to the potable water source.
    • Operates riding lawn mower, front-end loader, and forklift to perform landscaping duties such as moving and spreading dirt and placing sod on bare areas.
    • Provides assistance and backup to other Departmental employees in the maintenance of Zoo buildings.
    • Driving is essential.

    Governance and Organization

    Waco is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The City Council sets the tax rate, approves the budget, appoints members to City boards and commissions, enacts City ordinances, and appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Secretary, and the Municipal Court Judge.

    The City has a strong Financial Management Policy that guides the operation and delivery of quality City services, contributes to excellent AA+ and Aa1 bond ratings, and maintains an unassigned fund balance reserve in the General Fund equal to 28% of current year budgeted expenditures. The City of Waco has more than 1,600 employees and a total operating budget of over $400 million.

    The City provides a full range of municipal services including a regional airport, animal services, building inspections, code enforcement, convention and visitors bureau, emergency management, housing and community development, economic development, fire, public health, library, municipal court, parks and recreation, planning, police, public works, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum, utilities and zoo operations.
