    Salary Range:
    • Hiring salary is anticipated at $ 6,300 - $6,800 per month commensurate with education and experience
    • CSU Salary Range: $5,487 -$9,100 per month.

    Position Summary:

    Under the lead direction of the Chief Engineer and the general supervision of the Senior Director of Facilities Management, the Stationary Engineer performs a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, lighting, power, water, water treatment, fire alarms, building shell and interiors, and other mechanical and building components and systems for The California State University Maritime Academy.

    About the California State University Maritime Academy:

    Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

    Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Operates, maintains and repairs boilers, heaters, pumps, valves, appurtenances, and lines used in the distribution of steam and heated water.
    • Operates, maintains and repairs refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators together with all refrigerant lines and devices used to control temperatures.
    • Operates, maintains and repairs air compressors.
    • Maintains and repairs water and sewage systems.
    • Maintains and repairs multi-phase electrical circuits up to 600 volts.
    • Maintains and repairs electrical transformers, motors, controls, machinery, fixtures and appliances.
    • Maintains and repairs electronic systems and automatic fire alarm systems.
    • Maintains water filters and softeners.
    • Calibrates control systems for air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilation systems, including air balance, humidistat and solid state electronic motor control amplifiers.
    • Operates, maintains and repairs water and sewage systems, laundry, bakery and culinary equipment.
    • Calculates systems requirements to provide estimates for modification or replacement of systems.
    • Takes meter readings of water, gas and electricity consumption.
    • Keeps tools and equipment in good condition.
    • Keeps records and prepares reports.
    • Uses Computerized Maintenance Management(work order) System (CMMS) to accept, plan, execute and close out work assignments.
    • Attends and participates in safety meetings;
    • Inspects and trouble shoots electrical and mechanical systems and equipment to identify repairs needed.
    • Plans layouts and estimates costs of electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems.
    • Requisitions parts, supplies and equipment.
    • Leads and trains subordinate and less senior personnel, and advises them of unusual problems, procedures, and practices.
    • Has input and/or oversight into service contracts.

    Required Qualifications:

    Knowledge of:

    Boilers and auxiliary boiler room equipment; heating, lighting, ventilating, air conditioning, power, refrigeration, building electric and pneumatic controls, water treatment and other mechanical or electrical equipment; the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance and repair of such equipment.

    Ability to:

    Follow oral and written directions, demonstrate mechanical ability; keep accurate records; install, operate and make repairs to the various types of equipment listed above in the knowledge requirements; make written reports, read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; lay out work for others and direct them in this work; analyze situations accurately and take effective and immediate action.

    Education:
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Completion of 700 hours of formalized technical instruction relating to Stationary Engineering in training offered by such established programs as: Job Corps; Skill Centers; ROP; Trade Schools, Military; and JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act). An Associate of Applied Science or Certificate in Mechanical Electrical Technology, which must have included at least 12 semester units of instruction in heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems involving the use of automatic controls may be substituted for the 700 hours of technical instruction.
    • Two years of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.

    Experience:
    • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship for Stationary Engineers

    OR:
    • Four years of experience performing duties which include the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, refrigeration, ventilation and power equipment of large commercial, industrial or institutional buildings including the operation and maintenance of air conditioning systems involving the use of automatic controls

    Licenses: Must possess and maintain a valid California State Drivers' license in satisfactory standing.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Johnson Controls Metasys BAS experience;
    • Commercial pool operator certification;
    • NICET fire alarm certification.
    • CFC Certification (refrigerant handling certificate)

    Special Conditions:

    Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment physical is required.

    Hours of Work/Travel: Typical shifts are 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday and 10:30am to 7:00pm Saturday to Wednesday. Incumbents shifts to be determined by the Senior Director of Facilities Management. Incumbent may be required to work over-time, including weekends and holidays, and/or shift work, based on operational needs as determined by the Senior Director of Facilities Management and/or the Chief Engineer.

    Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions:
    • 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing, involves lifting heavy weight objects which may exceed 50 pounds.
    • Is around moving machinery;
    • Is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity;
    • Drives motorized equipment;
    • Operate power and hand tools and machine shop equipment;
    • Climb and work on scaffolding, ladders, riggings;
    • Work from personal aerial lifts;
    • Lift and carry materials, tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 lbs. in a safe manner;
    • Work inside and outside with chemicals and other possibly hazardous materials and substances;
    • Perform overhead work for extended periods of time;
    • Work in confined spaces, above ceilings, in tunnels and crawl spaces;
    • Work in hot, cold, humid, damp and dry indoor and outdoor conditions;
    • Perform work in multi-story buildings without elevator access.

    Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, DMV records check, and fingerprinting) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
