Position DutiesThe Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies for the Engineering Tech I/II position with the Storm and Sanitary Sewer and Landscape Services & Traffic Maintenance teams.The Engineering Technician I/IIs in the
Storm and Sanitary Sewer Engineering section of the Infrastructure Maintenance division typically perform the following specialized functions:
• Follows safe practices in investigating Sanitary-storm infrastructure failures.
• Performs considerable independent data collection; takes pictures and performs measurements at sewer locations, calculating water volumes, and reporting potential problems.
• Calculates volumes of trash, debris, and other obstructions which hinder the performance of the sewer system.
The Engineering Technician I/IIs in the
Landscape Services & Traffic Maintenance Team of the Transportation Safety, Operations and Parking division typically perform the following specialized functions:
• Supports Pavement projects identifying obstructions and managing contractual pruning of trees along special district residential streets in advance of pavement maintenance.
• Provides support to Inspectors in performing weed abatement inspection for fire prevention, quarterly landscape ratings for performance reporting, Beautify SJ inspection assistance, residential street sweeping and green stormwater infrastructure assistance.
• Administrative support such as creating spreadsheets and tracking data, performing complaint investigations, entering data into our database for core service reporting, reviewing plans, completing pay letters, assist in compiling/organizing Standard Operating Procedures for landscape and sweeper programs, assist with creating maintenance master plans and under the guidance of an Inspector; performing field inspections.

Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience Engineering Technician I
Completion of high school, trade school, or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).
Engineering Technician II
Completion of high school, trade school, or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) AND two (2) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering work performing materials sampling and testing, reviewing plans and specifications, construction or infrastructure inspections, traffic engineering, or working on a field survey crew.
Acceptable SubstitutionEngineering Technician II - Successful completion of two (2) academic years or sixty (60) semester units of college level engineering technology courses or related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience in sub-professional engineering work performing materials sampling and testing, reviewing plans and specifications, construction or infrastructure inspections, traffic engineering, or working on a field survey crew.
Required Licensing (such as driver’s license, certifications, etc.)Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required.
