    Position Description

    Tacoma Power is looking to hire an intern to join our Power Management - Energy Resource Planning & Evaluation team. This position is open to current college students and recent graduates with an interest in and aptitude for policy development, legislative issues, and project management. This paid internship is an entry-level position.

    The ideal candidate has an aptitude for collaboration to understand technical issues, is a clear communicator, and seeks opportunities to develop project management, facilitation, and research skills. This intern will be a crucial member of a small team with important responsibilities and deliverables of their own.

    The expected duration of the internship is up to 12 months, 20-40 hours of work per week. Tacoma Power is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity.

    Responsibilities Include:
    • Develop an understanding of Tacoma Power’s interests on policy issues, including their impact on utility operations and finances.
    • Support the Power Energy Portfolio Analyst, Principal in the maintenance and continuous improvement of policy and legislative position tracking.
    • Summarize and analyze policy proposals, draft bills, legislative hearings, and other stakeholder forums.
    • Conduct legal, policy, and technology research to support the policy objectives of Tacoma Power.
    • Track policy proposals and bill statuses.
    • Assist with documenting and updating internal policy positions and the drafting of amendments to bills and policy proposals.
    • Lead or assist with internal discussions to develop positions on bills and policy issues.


    Qualifications

    Minimum Education*
    High School Diploma or GED

    Minimum Experience*
    1 year of post-high school training

    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Experience or interest in policy development and legislative processes
    • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders
    • Creative, curious, and customer-focused
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Aptitude for project management
    • Experience with Microsoft Office 365 a plus

    Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
