    Department Summary

    The MLML/MBARI Research Library serves the affiliates of Moss Landing Marine Labs and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories is located at 8272 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing, CA 95039. MLML is administered by the College of Science at San José State University and is part of the California State University System. The MLML/MBARI Research Library is staffed by one faculty librarian and supported by 20-35 hours/per week of graduate student assistants.

    The MLML/MBARI Research Library collections are concentrated in fisheries, marine birds and mammals, invertebrate zoology, oceanography, ecology, molecular biology, biogeochemistry, toxicology, marine geology, marine chemistry, and deep-sea biology. The Library also holds resources in support of mechanical, electrical and software engineering and scientific instrumentation.

    Brief Description of Duties

    Part-time temporary position, 12/1/2024 through 5/31/2025, to manage the MLML/MBARI Research Library and provide essential services while the librarian is on a sabbatical leave for the Spring 2025 semester, 10 hours per week.
    • Provide research assistance and information literacy sessions to individuals and groups of faculty, researchers, and students in marine science.
    • Update library handouts and instruction materials in print and online.
    • Assist library student assistants with fulfillment and technical services functions such as: circulation, Rapido/Worldshare interlibrary loan, course reserves, user management, and inventory management in ExLibris Alma library management system as needed.
    • May perform minimal collection development tasks such as patron requested monographic ordering and invoice processing.
    • Communicate with MLML administration, liaise with King Library as needed, point of contact with CSU Chancellor’s Office Systemwide Digital Library Services team.
    • Special projects as need/time allows. Possible project areas include: outreach and displays, retroactive cataloging, system configuration, instruction development, collection analysis, etc.
    • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity-including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation-through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.


    Required Qualifications
    • Experience providing research assistance and instruction in the sciences.
    • Experience with a wide range of library literature databases and tools such as library catalogs and discovery tools, article databases, citation managers and in providing instruction and research assistance in using these tools.
    • Experience creating guides and instructional materials for users.
    • Experience with fulfillment and technical services functions such as user management, interlibrary loan, and/or copy cataloging.
    • This position is the only professional position serving the MLML/MBARI Research Library and requires flexibility, the ability to work independently; excellent problem solving skills; excellent communication skills with administration and users.
    • Required Degree: Masters in Library Science.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience.
    • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with ExLibris Alma library management system and Primo discovery service.
    • Experience providing research assistance and instruction to faculty and graduate students in marine science or related disciplines such as, biology, geology, environmental science.
    • Knowledgeable about technical services functions such as user management, interlibrary loan, and/or copy cataloging in Alma.
    • Experience with editing and creating webpages in WordPress or Springshare’s LibGuides.
    • Experience with collection management.


    Compensation

    Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. To learn more about range placement, please see University Policy S21-2 . Anticipated hiring ranges:

    Librarian 12-month Range 2 - $6,288 - $6,825
    Librarian 12-month Range 3 - $7,127 - $8,593
    Librarian 12-month Range 4 - $7,830 - $10,849
    Librarian 12-month Range 5 - $9,883 - $11,910 [14] [15] [16]

    Ranges are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time, 12-month Librarian--part-time rates are prorated. See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.

    Employment Conditions

    recommend or require compliance with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness and allows the core mission and activities of the campus to continue.

    Conditional Offer

    The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. Employment is contingent upon US residence and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers of employment are conditional, and may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
