    About the Opportunity

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
    The Agricultural Commissioner's Office is looking for individuals who are detail-oriented, s elf-motivated, enjoy working outdoors, and exhibit a customer-oriented attitude. The ideal candidate should have the ability to identify common plants in our County, to read and draw maps, be comfortable using computers and tablets, and work well with others. This position is a limited term (Project) Agricultural Assistant l grant funded position currently funded through June 30, 2025. At the end of the grant period, if another funding source is not identified for the continued support of the position, the Department will return to the Board of Supervisors with a request to delete the position.

    ABOUT THE POSITION
    This entry-level position reports directly to the supervisor and assists agricultural and/or weights and measures inspectors in performing program support duties in a variety of department programs. Incumbents in this class assist agricultural/weights and measures inspectors by performing a variety of routine and repetitive tasks that do not require the skill and knowledge of agricultural/weights and measures inspectors. Incumbents do not perform the full range of inspector duties and are not empowered to issue certificates or to enforce agriculture and weights and measures laws and regulations. These programs include, but are not limited to, pest detection, pest management, pest exclusion, pesticide use enforcement, seed inspection, nursery inspection, fruit and vegetable quality control, egg inspection, apiary activity, mapping, geographical information systems, weights and measures, Agricultural Center facility coordination and/or special or emergency agricultural projects. This position works under direct supervision, performs a wide variety of semi-skilled field tasks and related duties as required.

    Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Technical Services Bargaining Unit for labor relations purposes.

    Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.

    Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

    Typical Tasks

    • Maintain equipment and supplies as necessary;
    • Travel and work independently and collaboratively;
    • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation and compile reports on duties performed;
    • Use a computer and electronic devices/tools to collect and input data, and prepare reports; and
    • Perform a wide variety of agricultural and/or weights and measures program support duties under the supervision of licensed inspectors.


    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

    KNOWLEDGE
    • Agriculture, horticulture, common plant diseases and insect pests, and the methods and materials used in controlling them.

    SKILLS/ABILITIES
    • Follow oral and written directions promptly and efficiently;
    • Drive a motor vehicle;
    • Write reports and keep accurate records;
    • Read and draw accurate maps if applicable; and
    • Learn the California Food and Agriculture Code as it relates to the Agricultural Commissioner's Office.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • Possession of a high school diploma or GED; AND
    • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.

    DESIRABLES

    • Minimum two seasons in a county trapping program.

    EXAMINATION PROCESS

    Most County recruitments consists of the steps detailed below and are governed by Merit Principles. The examination process ensures that all applicants are given the same opportunity to gain employment within Stanislaus County.

    • Application Review and Screening. Applications are carefully screened based on information provided. Those who submit incomplete applications that lack relevant qualifications or do not submit all required documents will not be invited to move on.
    • Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
    • Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
    • Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months but may be extended up to eighteen months.
