THE POSITIONTo perform skilled and semi-skilled work involving the manufacture, installation and maintenance of traffic directional and informational signs and the layout, painting and application of street markings, striping, lines and directional messages on City street and parking lot surfaces.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey-level class in the Traffic Worker series. Incumbents of this class perform a wide range of installation, repair and maintenance work that requires previous traffic safety experience. Generally, work is reviewed upon completion, and overall changes in procedures or exceptions to rules are explained as they arise.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Immediate or general supervision is provided to Traffic Workers I by a higher level Traffic position. Traffic Workers I provide training guidance to Traffic Worker Trainees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDepending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform work involving traffic sign installing, removing, replacing, resetting, repairing, and maintenance.
- Assist and participate in the preparation and manufacture of traffic, directional, and informational City signs.
- Layout and paint lanes, parking lots, and curbs.
- Layout and apply hot thermo plastic and adhesive taped traffic stripes and markings.
- Operate sign marking equipment such as silk screen apparatus, stencils, welding equipment, pipe threaders and power saws.
- Operate, maintain, and repair specialized and complex street marking equipment as required.
- Build and stencil traffic barricades.
- Set up and remove barricades, cones, and warning signs as work requires.
- Maintain routine records of time and materials used.
- Install raised lane driving buttons and bars on street surfaces.
- Remove obsolete traffic markings on street surfaces, using grinding and power equipment.
- Install parking meters.
- Repair and install roadside delineation barricades and guardrail.
- Set up and remove computerized and mechanical traffic counters; participate in traffic counts.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
- The care and use of mechanical tools and equipment used in rough carpentry, painting and digging.
- And skill in the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the manufacture, installation, maintenance and repair of signs and street markings and associated equipment.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
- Use and care of equipment such as welding apparatus, jackhammers, sprayers, and grinders.
Ability to:
- Learn the proper techniques for the manufacture, installation and maintenance of traffic directional and informational signs, and the layout, painting and application of street markings.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English.
- Read and understand maps.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Use assigned equipment, sometimes at heights above ground in sign placement work.
- Work in traffic and learn proper safety procedures related to the work.
- Read and properly interpret blueprints and specifications related to the traffic markings.
- Measure distances accurately and layout work precisely.
- Weld at a skill level appropriate to the work.
- Maintain time and material records.
- Understand automated maintenance management systems.

Two years of experience comparable to a Traffic Worker Trainee with the City of Sacramento.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Driver License:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required for appointment to this classification. Appointee must obtain a valid California Class B Driver License during the probationary period. Individuals who fail to obtain the California Class B Driver License will not pass probation. Loss of the Class C and/or B License is a cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
Assessment:

Respiratory Protective Equipment:
Work in this classification requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

2. Training and Experience Exam: (Weighted 100%) - The questions located at the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam. Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of a candidate's education, training and experience. The exam score will determine your ranking on the eligible list for this job. When completing the T&E questions, please note:

3. Eligibility: Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Traffic Worker I examination.
4. Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.
5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan / fingerprinting; review by Human Resources, a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and / or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
