    Position Description

    The Kinesiology Department at San José State University is pleased to announce a search for an Assistant Professor: Exercise Physiology. We highly encourage candidates with specializations in applied exercise physiology, with expertise in physiological assessments, exercise testing, exercise programming, strength and conditioning, and clinical exercise physiology to apply.

We train our students in the areas of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport history, sport philosophy, sport sociology, teacher education, adapted physical education, measurement and evaluation, motor learning, motor development, and sport psychology, among others.     Required Qualifications
    • Earned Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Human Performance, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution. Doctorate must be conferred or awarded prior to the start date
    • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in Exercise Physiology, including Physiological Assessment, Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, and ECG Interpretation and Exercise Testing. Ability and desire to serve on thesis committees, supervise theses/projects, and advise in both the graduate and undergraduate programs.
    • Record of publications or strong potential for publications and external funding.
    • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
    • Expertise in health technology and/or artificial intelligence as it relates to exercise physiology
    • ACSM Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP), ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP), and/or NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certifications, as well as membership in ACSM and/or NSCA.
    • Experience working with laboratory equipment (e.g., metabolic carts, ECGs, isokinetic dynamometers, medical BIA instruments, Biodex balance system, hydrostatic weighing tank, accelerometers to measure physical activity, skinfold calipers and other anthropometric instruments, spirometers, Cholestech, lactate analyzers).
    • Interest in working with the Sport and Fitness Evaluation program which offers fitness assessments to the community on a fee-for-service basis.
    • A comprehensive understanding of kinesiology as an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary endeavor, and enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary department.


    Key Responsibilities
    • Teach exercise physiology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise theses/projects, serve on thesis committees, and advise students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. May also be expected to teach in other areas of the major, in the general education, or activity programs.
    • Conduct research, seek external funding where appropriate, present professional papers, and publish in professional journals.
    • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
    • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
    • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

    Other Duties

    Note that all San José State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, some faculty duties may lead to designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to complete Clery Act training and to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution.

    Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety). The President may recommend or require compliance with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness and allows the core mission and activities of the campus to continue.
