    THE POSITION

    Solano County invites you to apply for a challenging, fast paced, rewarding career as a Public Safety Dispatcher (Entry). In this position you learn to receive, evaluate and relay requests for law enforcement, emergency and other services to the appropriate personnel. This position is characterized by the responsibility to learn to dispatch law enforcement and emergency service personnel and to call for mutual aid assistance. Incumbents learn to operate equipment contained in a public safety dispatch console, which includes multi-line telephones, TTY (teletype), TDD (telephone for deaf and disabled), pagers, radios and computer-aided dispatch equipment; techniques of acquiring essential information from emergency calls and prioritizing requests for assistance; law enforcement terminology and public safety dispatch procedures.

    The current recruitment is to fill a full-time regular position. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.

    Essential Duties

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

    Dispatches law enforcement and emergency fire and/or medical services to respond to requests for services; receives and evaluates requests for service; monitors, receives and refers calls to a variety of other agencies such as California Department of Fish and Game, California Highway Patrol, city police departments, County Animal Control, Coroner, air and ground ambulances and the County Transportation Department; monitors availability of personnel and resources.

    Answers multi-line phones and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls; enters calls and other information into computer system; monitors radio communications.

    Monitors sheriff and fire unit location and status; maintains radio communications with field personnel; requests additional assistance from County and/or other agency personnel to respond to emergency situations as needed.

    Operates phone, TTY (teletype), TDD (telephone for deaf and disabled), pagers, radios and computer-aided dispatch equipment; automated record-keeping systems; codes and procedures; maintains backup tapes on Dictaphone tape machines.

    Maintains records of incoming service requests and responding actions; prepares reports of shift activity and briefs incoming shifts; monitors availability of personnel and response equipment; updates County map books; prepares citizen vacation watch requests; receives County burn status reports and coordinates burn activities with current burn status.

    Experience: No experience is required.

    Education/Training: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

    Certificate: A net keyboard typing speed of 40 words per minute (WPM) is required. (For candidates without a certification a typing test will be provided)

    SELECTION PROCESS

All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant’s ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses.     A minimum score of 70% is required to continue in the selection process, unless otherwise announced.

    DOCUMENT SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Typing Certificate Requirements: The typing certificate must contain a minimum NET speed of 40 words per minute. It must be a timed 3 - 5 minute test, include the gross number of words typed per minute, and the number of errors. It may not be more than 12 months old at the time of application and must be from an accredited school or a qualified agency with an examiner's signature. Certificates obtained through the internet (online) will not be accepted. (For candidates without a certification a typing test will be provided)

    Applicants that have participated in prior Solano County skills testing must contact recruitment@solanocounty.com by the final filing deadline to request their prior results be applied to this recruitment - this will not be done automatically. Prior results cannot be more than 12 months old at the time of application.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS

    To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE FINAL FILING DATE. Applicants who have a service connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons.

    Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans rated at not less than 30% disability shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran’s preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
