    The City of Olathe is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer III to join our team to work in a project manager capacity for the Street Preservation program. This role offers hands-on experience in public sector engineering and the opportunity to build a strong foundation in municipal infrastructure while working alongside experienced professionals.

    The City of Olathe manages, maintains, and repairs over 1,300 lane miles of street pavement, including associated curbs and sidewalks. To maintain a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of at least 70, we prioritize projects annually. Our pavement preservation strategies include crack sealing, microsurfacing, mill and overlay, and complete reconstruction. Funding for these projects comes from the Capital Improvement Plan, street maintenance sales tax, and additional funding sources such as grants. As a Civil Engineer III, you will be part of a dynamic team, working on vital infrastructure projects that support the city's long-term goals. This position is the second step in a four-level career progression from Civil Engineer III to IV, providing opportunities for growth and development.     Salary Range: $80,080 - $110,545 depending on qualifications

    The Civil Engineer III acts as the project manager for design and construction of projects. Project scopes may include street preservation, street reconstruction, stormwater systems, water and wastewater systems, treatment facilities and rehabilitation projects, including inflow and infiltration (I&I) reduction. The Civil Engineer III is the top level of a two-level career progression of Civil Engineer II - III.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Serves as the Project Manager for assigned projects with supervisory oversight, directing all project activities; negotiates with consultants on project scope and fee, managing the project funding, schedule, quality assurance and construction management.
    • Reviews consultant-produced engineers plans, technical documents, and reports for new or re-construction involving roadways, geometric improvements, traffic signals, streetlights, water, sanitary, and storm systems, traffic control and construction phasing for conformance with City of Olathe technical specifications, design criteria and applicable codes and ordinances.
    • Collaborates with construction inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction; reviews plans for compliance with original specifications and approves necessary changes .
    • Communicates consistently with project stakeholders both internally and externally.
    • Prepares and/or provides review of interlocal agreements, consultant contracts, and other related agreements and contracts required in the process of completing assigned projects; coordinates the preparation and execution of these documents with adjoining cities, Johnson County, Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and other agencies.


    Qualifications

    Experience: Four or more years of engineering and project management experience is required. Experience working in a municipality or Public Works Department is preferred.

    Education: A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field is required. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.

    Licenses & Certifications: Must be a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Kansas or be able to obtain a PE license in the State of Kansas within six months of employment. A valid driver's license with a favorable driving record is also required.

    Environmental or Physical Demands: Requires working in a variety of locations and conditions, commonly splitting time between an office setting and construction sites.
