    Overview

    One Agency, One Mission: Public Safety
    The Larimer County Jail is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Jail Booking Specialist to join our team. This position plays a critical role in the processing and release of inmates, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal and procedural requirements. As a Jail Booking Specialist, you will maintain inmate records, oversee booking operations, and communicate effectively with inmates, staff, and visitors. This role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to handle confidential information securely, and the capacity to perform in a fast-paced environment. The position offers competitive pay starting at $24.43 per hour, with opportunities for growth and advancement within the county.

    Essential Functions
    • May exercise indirect supervision over lower-level positions or may function as a Field Training Officer. Exercises direct supervision over inmates held in the booking room at the Larimer County Jail.
    • Processes and releases inmates while maintaining accuracy of all tracked information.
    • Maintains accuracy, confidentiality, and security of all records and work area.
    • Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the processing of documents such as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons, and other legal writs and court documents.
    • Uses interpersonal communication skills to communicate with inmates, professional visitors, and the public by providing information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
    • Prepares a variety of reports using appropriate grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Process reports as appropriate (i.e., file, alphabetize, label, etc.).
    • Provides customer service within the Booking area including providing information to interested parties, collecting fees and documents, and taking in and releasing property.
    • Enters data into computer systems or databases; look-ups information in databases; creates basic word processor documents and enters data into spreadsheets; uses email to communicate.
    • Performs crisis intervention functions to include inmate counseling, suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior, and implementing appropriate intervention action.
    • Exercises independent judgment in determining appropriate classification of inmates and assessing and responding to the needs of special populations.
    • Demonstrates competent communication skills in court and other formal settings.
    • Performs searches of objects capable of concealing contraband.
    • Briefs incoming booking staff concerning events impacting shift.
    • Operates CCIC/NCIC computer for teletypes and queries of records related to vehicles, persons, or articles of interest.
    • May be subject to verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of inmates and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.
    • Uses radio, intercom, and telephone communications systems to communicate effectively and coherently with office personnel and inmates and use other office communications systems as necessary.
    • Conducts visual and audio surveillance of inmates for extended periods of time.
    • Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and forms.
    • Detects the presence of conditions such as smoke, unusual or excessive noise, odors, etc.
    • Ensures all equipment is operable; reports maintenance problems.
    • Answers telephones and takes independent action as necessary.
    • Assists in training new Jail Booking Specialists.
    • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with diverse groups, which includes the public, inmates, staff, other criminal justice agency personnel, and County government staff.
    • Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as maintaining accurate records, report preparation, and answering telephones.

    Nonessential Functions
    • When a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of Commissioners, all Larimer County employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker.
    • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.


    Qualifications

    • One (1) year of experience in basic clerical work required.
    • Previous experience in a criminal justice setting or a degree in criminal justice is preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • General Office practices and procedures
    • Work under stress and exercise good judgment in emergency situations.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, using correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
    • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
    • Operation of standard office equipment including fax machines, copiers, and computers.
    • Learn to operate security and communications equipment.
    • Read and comprehend department and County rules, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures.
    • Accurately apply procedures and policies and assess situations and people.
    • Basic principles and procedures of detention, judicial system, and incarceration.
    • Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations to include Colorado State laws, Constitutional case law, and Colorado Criminal laws pertaining to the Jail Environment
    • Work a rotating shift schedule to include weekends, holidays, days, and nights.
    • Use independent judgment to perform duties independently without close supervision.
