    CAREER DESCRIPTION

    SHOP PLANNER ELECTRICAL/MECHANICAL

    THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
    The eligible list established through this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Shop Planner positions within John Wayne Airport and the County of Orange. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.

    In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following date:
    Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

    Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and the successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

    The award-winning John Wayne Airport, Orange County (JWA) has been a major cornerstone of Orange County for more than 100 years.     THE OPPORTUNITY
    John Wayne Airport is in search of a dedicated individual with a strong background in general construction trades practices to join the Service Desk team as a Shop Planner. The successful candidate must be a highly organized, detail-oriented team player with the ability to multi-task and function in a work environment with frequent task changes. The Shop Planner’s primary duties include utilizing a Computerized Maintenance Management System to plan and coordinate various preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities. The Shop Planner must exhibit excellent communication skills while interfacing with airport stakeholders and vendors to carry out daily tasks. The ideal candidate for this opening will possess specialized skills in electrical/mechanical trades.

    The dedicated Shop Planner will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
    • Utilize an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
    • Plan, schedule, and coordinate maintenance and work activities with site operations and service providers.
    • Reviews maintenance or construction project work orders to determine types of crafts utilized and materials needed; estimates type of labor and amounts of time required for each craft involved; plans and lays out detailed work schedules for the accomplishment of work by the crafts workers for one or more shops.
    • Keeps shop records on all work projects; initiates procurement of materials, tools, and equipment in advance of project; prepares work requests for various shop personnel.
    • Research and establish preventative and predictive maintenance schedules based on the type of equipment and asset classifications (electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation).
    • Utilize CMMS to create, process, review, update, and track work orders, in addition to attaching documentation such as service reports, calibration sheets, and invoices.
    • Coordinate with budget, finance, and John Wayne Airport operations to perform asset onboarding, tracking, verification, and decommissioning.
    • Perform data analysis and develop and generate ad-hoc reports related to operations and maintenance key performance indicators (KPls).
    • Use the combination of an EAM and other software to maintain operations and maintenance records, budget, expenditures, work orders, and O&M manual database for facilities and other defined assets.
    • Utilize technical ability and experience to make recommendations to improve operational efficiency, reliability, effectiveness, and reduce life cycle costs.
    • Periodically inspects job sites to determine conditions which may affect accomplishments of work in accordance with County standards and practices; initiates changes in craft sequences or materials when necessary; performs supervisory functions in place of supervisor at construction site when directed
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
    In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will have three (3) years of experience working with operations and/or maintenance in coordinating work activities and collaborating with and managing contractors.

    In addition to the above, the successful candidate will possess most of the core competencies listed below:

    TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE | EXPERTISE
    • Current construction methods, tools, and materials used in building trades.
    • Characteristics of and trade practices used in electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems, elevator maintenance, and metal trades work
    • Pertinent building codes, Cal-OSHA building construction regulations, and other safety rules and regulations
    • Current building materials by name, manufacturer, and source
    • Characteristics of building structures and trade practices used in their maintenance, such as carpentry, painting, masonry, and grounds maintenance.
    • Proven ability to accurately plan and manage a task or project involving multiple disciplines. This includes scoping, estimating time, materials and costs, procurement, quality control, closeout, and documentation. Disciplines include but are not limited to electrical and mechanical systems, contract management, and light and heavy-duty construction equipment.
    • Expertise utilizing Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
    • Proficiency in utilizing the following Microsoft Office software applications: Outlook, Word, OneNote, and Excel.

    • Analyze problems related to maintenance activities and landfill operations and recommend reasonable solutions to such problems.
    • Ability to generate performance reports, quantify resources, and plan work in an effective manner.
    • Ability to prioritize, implement, and complete tasks based on criteria provided by others.
    ORAL/WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
    • Communicate orally and in writing in a clear and effective manner.
    • Willingness to speak and present in front of both peers and upper management.
    • Must be able to respond and communicate in a demanding environment with a wide range of stakeholders.
    TEAMWORK
    • Proven ability to lead by example in terms of timeliness, documentation, discipline, dedication, and a commitment to do the right thing.

    ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS
    Work in various structures and outdoors amid loud noise and fumes in all weather conditions. Exposure to dust, pollen, birds, odors, noise, vibration, etc.

    LICENSE REQUIRED
    The successful candidate must possess, obtain, and maintain the following licenses:

    • Valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment
    • Valid Airport Access Badge with an Airport Driving Endorsement within ten (10) days of employment
    AIRPORT ACCESS REQUIREMENTS The successful candidate must clear background check which includes a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Security Threat Assessment (STA).

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.
