    CAREER DESCRIPTION

    Assessment Technician Trainee

    SALARY INFORMATION

    This position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:

    Effective June 27, 2025: 4.00% increase

    This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list . This list will be used to fill current and future Assessment Technician Trainee positions in this classification until the next recruitment.

    THE OFFICE OF THE ASSESSOR

    The Assessor’s Office values all legally assessable property with uniformity and impartiality, producing property tax assessment rolls in accordance with the laws of the State of California. The Assessor staff help Business, Real and Personal Property owners understand their property valuations and apply exclusions and exemptions as allowed by property tax law.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    This class is the entry level in the Assessment Technician series. The class is for training/preparing employees for a promotion to Assessment Technician II. Normally, an Assessment Technician Trainee will initially work with an Assessment Technician II or higher, and with increasing experience will be required to independently do routine assessment technician assignments subject to a check and review. There is no permanent status in the trainee class. This class operates under an "up or out" system with one (1) year of training at the end of which the employee is either promoted to Assessment Technician II or they are released from this position. Under general supervision, an Assessment Technician Trainee will perform technical and public contact work in supplying a variety of services and information to the general public relative to property valuation matters. In addition, the position includes:
    • Explaining and carrying out existing assessment policies and procedures
    • Inspecting property and collecting data for the market appraisal of property
    • Generating reports and assisting with data analysis
    • Performing a wide variety of support functions such as checking and reviewing value, cost, income, and other declarations
    • Computing value of real and personal property
    • Researching title transfers


    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    The ideal candidate will possess one (1) year of experience conferring with customers or clients via telephone, email, in-person, or internet to provide information about products or services, take or enter orders, cancel or open accounts, or obtain details of comments and complaints. Possession of an Associate's of Arts or Science degree (or higher) can substitute for the required experience.

    In addition, the ideal candidate will possess extensive professional work experience and/or knowledge in the following core competencies:
    • Technical Knowledge | Technical Experience
      • Understanding modern office, store, or branch procedures, practices and systems including operating standard equipment that can aid customer support, such as operating phone lines or computers for email or internet communication.
      • Conferring with customers or clients by telephone, email, in-person, or over the internet to provide information about products or services, take or enter orders, cancel, or open accounts, or obtain details of comments and complaints.
    • Problem Solving | Analytical Skills
      • Identifying and resolving challenging technical issues and problems or researching possible solutions
      • Accomplishing divergent complex work in a dynamic environment (i.e. the ability to multi-task)
      • Communicating with tact to customers of diverse backgrounds
      • Working with mathematics and spatial design layouts
    • Relationship Building | Interpersonal Skills
      • Working with other public and private agencies in efforts to provide customer service to the community, public, and key stakeholders
      • Defusing confrontational situations with distraught customers
    • Oral | Written Communication Skills
      • Responding quickly, courteously, and proficiently to customer service requests
      • Soliciting feedback and adjusting customer requests to fit into business improvements
      • Understanding basic principles of writing and grammar

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS
