    The Position

    Under general supervision, Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    The Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health (SNAMHS) is recruiting for a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I for Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital and Stein Forensic Hospital. Therapeutic Recreation Specialists plan, organize, and coordinate recreation activities; interview clients to assess capabilities, interests, and barriers; monitor progress and recommend modifications to the program as needed; review medical records and consults with medical staff regarding physical and/or mental barriers; outlines therapeutic activities and prepares treatment plan; facilitates individual and group recreation therapy sessions; modifies and adapts equipment to accommodate special needs; plans, organizes, and implements therapeutic activities including ,but not limited to- fitness, team building, art, wellness, life skills, music, and leisure education; manages documentation, including conducting assessments, writing treatment plans, and completing DAP style progress notes. This is a full-time position working a variable schedule Wednesday through Saturday.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area, such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, community-based and/or correctional environment; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Must be available to work evenings, weekends and some holidays. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.     Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
