Accountant functions with organization, quality and timeliness.
This work includes accounts payable and budgetary analysis:- Enters accounts payable transactions or posts data into automated financial systems. Researches and resolves various accounts payable discrepancies and reconciles all payments. Informs internal and external customers. Develops/manages regular reporting tools on items such as transactions, accounts payable and related financial activities
- Coordinates with staff to assess current and future financial needs and special requests doing research on a variety of financial transactions. Collects and analyzes data regarding budgets, expenditures and revenues. Reviews data collected and may monitor budgets to provide accurate and timely financial information to the departments and outside reporting agencies. Coordinates with department to assess needs and requirement for fiscal monitoring and reporting
About Our TeamThe position will be part of the Business Team which comprises the Department Business Manager and Senior Accountant. The team works closely with the Contracts Team, the Housing Grants Administrator and the Research, Data and Systems Division to operationally support the department’s five programmatic divisions: Homeless and Prevention Services, Permanent Housing and Supportive Services, Equitable Housing & Community Development, Veterans Services.
The Wake County Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization Department seeks to improve the quality, affordability and access to housing for families and communities whose needs are not met by the natural housing market. As the population and economy continue to grow in Wake County, the need for affordable housing development and preservation increases. Not only do more units of affordable housing need to be built, but housing services must also be provided to support families and individuals to access or maintain safe, decent, affordable housing. Affordable housing is also critical to preserving Wake County’s economic competitiveness by offering housing for workers at all income levels, supporting housing stability and economic opportunity for its residents and furthering Wake County’s commitment to healthy and inclusive growth.
The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- Two years of experience in accounting
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - Three years of accounts payable or related experience
- Proficient work understanding of CGI Advantage financial management software
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Excel
- Experience in assisting colleagues with fiscal transactions, system training, and/or review of financial work products
How Will We Know You're 'The One'? - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Ability to research, analyze, identify and correct financial problems and accounting errors
- Ability to make minor adjustments to the accounting system and procedures
- Ability to prepare, analyze and present financial information clearly and concisely in oral and written form
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply the laws and regulations pertaining to financial records, including complex Federal and State fiscal regulations
- Considerable knowledge of governmental accounting methods, procedures, principles and practices
