    The Position

    The Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development (DCD) is currently seeking to fill six (6) vacancies in the Building Inspector I classification. The Building Inspector I position works within DCD's Building Division and is the first working-level class in the Building Inspector series.

    Positions in this class may be assigned to either New Construction Inspection Services responsible for inspecting buildings/structures being constructed, altered, or repaired to determine conformance with building codes, approved plans, specifications, zoning laws, and ordinances or the Code Enforcement Unit, where building and zoning code enforcement is the primary duty. This classification reports to a Principal Building inspector or the Supervisor, Inspection Services

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months. All employment offers are contingent upon passing a physical examination and functional capacity test.

    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out-of-state valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

    Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.

    Experience: Either 1) Three (3) years of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience as a journey-level carpenter, electrician, plumber, HVAC/mechanical worker; licensed contractor; or performing duties equivalent to a Building Plan Checker II in Contra Costa County or 2) One (1) year as a building/grading inspector.

    Certification: Obtain a certification from a recognized state, national or international association in residential building inspection, code enforcement, or a related field within two (2) years of employment, pursuant to California Health and Safety Code Section 18949.28(a). Certification must be maintained in good standing for the duration of employment at all levels of Building Inspector.
    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Experience as a Journey level carpenter (3 years) full-time
    • Licensed contractor
    • ICC certifications (Building, electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing)
    • Understanding of accepted building construction safety standards and methods


    Selection Process

    Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process. Online Video Interview Assessment : Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online video interview assessment. The assessment (interview) will be conducted to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. In the Oral Assessment, candidates must achieve an overall passing score of 70% of higher. These may include, but are not limited to: Legal & Regulatory Navigation, Professional & Technical Expertise, Professional Integrity & Ethics, Customer Focus, Valuing Diversity (Weighted 100%) The video assessment will be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment, as well as a computer or mobile device with a camera.
    Departmental Hiring Interview

    Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process. All employment offers are contingent upon passing a physical examination and functional capacity test.

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
