    Position Description

    Tacoma Power's Power Management section has an opportunity for a Data Scientist to join our team. This position will be required to lead and directly engage in efforts to develop predictive and analytical models to support data driven decision making in support of Tacoma Power’s participation in organized wholesale energy markets. This position will also supervise and direct the work of senior and junior analysts engaged in model development, analysis of model results, data visualization, meter data management, and market settlements activities. Tacoma Power’s stated mission is “We provide affordable and reliable electrical services.” This position will lead the provision of both tactical and strategic analytical support to Tacoma Power’s Trading and Systems Operations groups. The goal of that analytical support is to maximize the economic benefits of participating in organized energy markets while maintaining Tacoma Power’s high standards of system reliability, all to the benefit of Tacoma’s ratepayers.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Lead the development of predictive and analytical models using computer programming, statistical methods, and forecasting tools. Such models, and associated visualizations and reports, will be used to guide strategic decision making and operational improvements related to organized wholesale electricity market participation.
    • Use mathematical and statistical techniques to develop algorithms for use in collecting, analyzing, and detecting useful patterns, trends, and statistically significant relationships in the very large and disparate data sources required for, and resulting from, Tacoma Power’s organized wholesale electricity market participation.
    • Work cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders to define and implement improvements to data strategy and analytics capabilities.
    • Partner with third party software vendors when needed to resolve complex issues and identify and implement enhancements.
    • Supervise senior data analysts in the development, improvement, and use of complex models, algorithms, and visualizations to support analysis and data driven decision making.
    • Supervise junior analysts responsible for conducting meter data management and settlements activities critical to organized wholesale electricity market participation.


    Qualifications

    Minimum Education*
    Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics or directly related field.

    Minimum Experience*
    6 years experience in statistical analysis or modeling that must include developing and building predictive data models, and 1 year supervisory/managerial, lead or analytics experience as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).

    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
