    The Position

    Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action; OR incumbents serve as the technical scientific expert within the Department of Transportation.

    This position is within the Environmental Division, Biology Section, and is located in Carson City. The incumbent will conduct biological field surveys, research, and investigations to identify biological resources present within or near a project; prepare reports and assessments, monitor construction activities, develop suitable mitigation to address impacts, and ensure compliance with permits and other biological commitments; and secure State and Federal permits in conformance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). This is a supervisory position, so in addition to the above duties, they will also delegate work to either up to two lower level staff, at level ES2 or ES3, and approve timesheets and travel requests.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and four years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and six years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
