This is the entry level class for the Telecommunications Specialist series. Under immediate supervision and direction, incumbents receive on-the-job training in the repair, installation, and maintenance of telephone and other communication equipment and systems. You will learn to maintain customer rapport by listening to and resolving concerns and maintaining a safe work environment by following standards and policies.

We are looking for someone who has:- Knowledge of the basic theory of telephone communications and basic electronics
- Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures in the maintenance of electronic communications equipment
- Basic knowledge of routing and switching equipment
- Basic knowledge of MS Office applications including Visio
- Basic knowledge of hand and power tools including telephony tools, DVM and a Tone Generator
- Basic understanding of safety regulations and safe working procedures related to working with electronic equipment and tools
What you will typically be responsible for:- Assisting Telecommunications Specialist II's in the installation, repair, and maintenance of telephone and other communication equipment, UPS’s and other devices
- Installing, moving, and changing of telephone sets
- Assisting Telecommunications Specialist II rack and install network and other PBX, UPS & voicemail equipment
- Providing As-Built drawings for projects
- Working cooperatively with clients and coworkers in a service-oriented environment

Minimum QualificationsLicense Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator’s license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.
Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D equivalent or a high school proficiency certificate supplemented by twelve (12) semester or eighteen (18) quarter college units in telecommunications, electronic technology, or closely related field.
Substitution: One (1) year of full-time experience in the installation, servicing, and repair of a variety of telecommunication instruments, equipment, and systems may substitute for the required college units.
Desirable Qualifications:- Cisco VoIP, Teltronics, Toshiba or Siemens PBX experience
- Cabling experience with emphasis on CommScope experience or certification
- Use tools and test equipment to perform various telecommunication installations, repairs and services
- Ability to read and understand electronic diagrams, schematic, factory service manuals, and user guides
- Work effectively and cooperatively with customers, members of the public, coworkers, supervisors and managers

Tentatively scheduled: November 5 - November 11, 2024. (Weighted 100%) The assessment will be administered remotely using a computer. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment. It is not recommended to take the assessment using a cell phone.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO PASS A SECURITY BACKGROUND CHECK AND PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL: As a condition of employment, finalists will be required to successfully pass the pre-employment screening requirements established for the position. The requirements are based on the assigned duties and responsibilities of the position. Candidates who are being considered for appointment for specific positions may be required to pass a medical examination. Candidates who cannot meet the medical requirement may be placed under waiver until this requirement is met. T elecommunication Specialists have to intermittently and at times repetitively bend, squat, and kneel to retrieve and handle supplies, perform repairs, complete installations, etc. They lift, move, and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in general office are as and occasionally from other sites. O n a repetitive basis they may reach at full extension or overhead while pulling. They may be required to maintain awkward positions for extended periods of time, lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds to complete repairs or installations of phones, and may climb up and down ladders and pull cable through ceiling and walls.
Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process. The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
