    Plans Examiner (Community Development)

    JOB SUMMARY:
As a Plans Examiner at the Village of Schaumburg, not only will you be a part of a thriving community, but you’ll also be a key player in what makes this community thrive. You’ll contribute to urban development in the largest center of economic development in the State of Illinois–outside the City of Chicago–and be a part of the process from blueprint to construction.

You’ll review and approve plans for residential, commercial, and industrial construction, making sure that what’s built in Schaumburg is built to last. You’ll work closely with architects, engineers, and builders, keeping our community safe by adhering to international building codes and local ordinances.

The Village of Schaumburg is always growing and changing and as the Plans Examiner, you’ll help us continue to live our motto: Progress Through Thoughtful Planning. You’ll be a vital part of diverse and exciting projects like:

    •    Lurie Children’s Hospital, a 75,000 square foot, three-story outpatient hospital serving Schaumburg and surrounding communities, extending world-class pediatric care to area families.
    •    Andretti Indoor Karting & Games, a multi-level entertainment mecca with indoor electric karting, a two-story laser tag arena, virtual reality experiences, and so much more.
    •    Fogo De Chao, an 8,000 square foot Brazilian steakhouse with an approximate $12 million construction investment.
    •    Northwest Community Hospital, a three-story, 62,000 square foot outpatient hospital that will help keep our community safe and healthy.

That’s just the beginning. As an employee of our Community Development Department, you’ll be a part of the team responsible for planning and zoning, development review, and building and engineering permit services–keeping our community safe and making sure that progress never stops.

  • ABOUT THE COMPANY

    • Village of Schaumburg
    • Village of Schaumburg

Located just 30 miles outside Chicago and about 11 miles west of O’Hare International Airport, Schaumburg is the premier suburban business destination in Illinois. In the past 60 years, with vision and thoughtful planning, Schaumburg has transformed from a small farming community into a thriving economic center that is home to more business in Illinois than any other community outside of Chicago. The village's businesses provide support to the community’s 78,000 residents, 80,000 employees and the northwest suburbs by offering professional and high-quality services and goods.

Beyond this distinction as the economic center of the northwest suburbs, Schaumburg is a community of neighbors with first-rate services and amenities offering those who live here a high-quality life. Schaumburg offers a variety of unique opportunities that can satisfy anyone’s particular craving. Residents can attend a concert or the Farmers Market in the Town Square, take in theater and other shows at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts, visit the Trickster Cultural Center (Native-owned and operated art gallery), discover family fun at Legoland Discovery Center, enjoy independent league baseball at Wintrust Field, or use any of the nationally recognized Schaumburg Park District facilities. Additionally, the Schaumburg Township District Library is the second-largest public library in Illinois, with more than one million visitors each year.

    History

The Village of Schaumburg was incorporated on March 7, 1956, but the heritage of Schaumburg dates back to the much earlier times when the first inhabitants of the area were members of the Sauk, Fox, Pottawatomie, and Kickapoo Indian tribes.

Schaumburg’s earliest residents were primarily German-speaking immigrants and their days consisted of farming, community and family. In many ways that remains true today, although now Schaumburg is a mecca of commercial activity. "Images of America - Schaumburg" is a pictorial testament of what life was like for past residents before the days of malls and expressways.

The Village of Schaumburg is a thriving community of 78,723 residents located 11 miles west of O’Hare International Airport and approximately 26 miles northwest of Chicago. Not only is Schaumburg the twelfth-largest community in the State of Illinois, but it is also home to the second-largest concentration of retail, office, and commercial activity. Notable village distinctions include being rated as an excellent or good place to live by 95% of respondents in the National Community Survey; having multiple highly-awarded and accredited departments; being selected as a Best-In-Class-Employer by Gallagher for midsize employers and being recognized as a Better Business Town by The Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois.

The village employs approximately 600 employees in 12 departments, including police, fire, engineering and public works, communications, community development, cultural services, economic development, finance, general government, human resources, information technology, and transportation. Our employees work to serve the residents and strive to make Schaumburg the best community it can be.
